Position Summary:

Provides assistance for the operation and maintenance of the Human Structure Facility, including but not limited to taking calls, scientific embalmment of remains, preparing remains for in-house labs and shipment to other facilities, cremation & return or scattering of cremains. Responsible for maintaining sufficient supplies & equipment; coordinating with contracted vendors on any specific transfer or other special requests; maintaining databases; performing support functions for administration and supervisors, faculty, and students; and basic maintenance and/or coordination with the departments.

Position Key Accountabilities:


  • Embalms, maintains and assigns cadavers for biomedical research, gross anatomy teaching and medical training.
  • Receives, embalms, and maintains cadavers for teaching and research purposes.
  • Performs cleaning, sterilization and custodial duties in the embalming room and gross anatomy work area
  • Maintains an adequate level of embalming supplies, monitors loans of anatomical materials to students and faculty.
  • Ensures a constant supply of cadavers to satisfy the training and research needs of various departments.
  • Responsible for initial contact with the family and ultimate acceptance of the deceased when on call.
  • Responsible to cremate the remains and return to the decedent's family or scatter at the sea.
  • Maintains data entry, i.e. cadaver receipt forms, new cadavers, location of specimens, cremations, and etc. on a daily basis.
  • Responsible for cadaver transfers, for deliveries and pick-up specimens.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Licensed Embalmer required. A high level of interpersonal, problem solving, oral and written communication skills are a must to effectively collaborate with faculty, students and various project teams.
  • Ability to multi-task and to utilize critical thinking.
  • Excellent phone etiquette and customer service skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of medical and surgical terminology.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.

Minimum Education:

Graduation from an accredited school of mortuary sciences.

Minimum Experience:

One (1) year experience in embalming practices and procedures required.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
