The Director of Student Involvement and New Student Programs is a member of the Valparaiso University Student Life staff and reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Life. The Director of Student Involvement and New Student Programs is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction for student organization management, student programming, fraternity, and sorority life, new student orientation, and university traditions and programs consistent with the philosophies and goals of Valparaiso University and the Division of Student Life. The Director supports the University's mission by ensuring a robust and engaging student involvement program is available for all students. The Director of Student Involvement and New Student Programs supervises the staff in the Center for Student Involvement and works cooperatively with the team to provide support for more than 100 student organizations, the advising of the University Programming Board and all university student traditions, the advancement of the fraternity and sorority community, and the operational execution of the new student orientation program. This position requires significant interaction and collaboration with constituents across campus as well as serving as a leader within the Student Life Division.


Major Responsibilities:



  • Develop the overall vision and mission for overall student engagement at the University in alignment with the vision for Student Life and the University's mission and strategic plan.

  • Hire, orient, and provide on-going training, supervision and evaluation for the professional, clerical, and student staff.

  • Serve as the primary advisor to the University Programming Board and the planning and execution of all University student traditions.

  • Manage the myValpo student organization engagement software for the University and assist with data tracking to contribute to the assessment of the student involvement program, and report data as requested

  • Develop an annual advising structure to support the multiple entities within the fraternity and sorority experience, and plan and execute all leadership development programming for the community.

  • Serve as the advisor to the Fraternity and Sorority Judicial Board and guide all conduct related matters for fraternity and sorority life.

  • Manage all program logistics for the annual new student orientation program including collaboration with campus partners to successfully lead orientation and transition programs.

  • Develop the annual communications plan for new student orientation, welcome week, and other first year programs in partnership with University Marketing and Undergraduate Admission.

  • Develop and administer an annual budget and oversee all fiscal matters within the area of student involvement and new student programs.

  • Participate with other members of the Student Life and University staff in developing and implementing programs and services that help to create the best possible overall student experience at the University.

  • Support and enhance the work of the division of Student Life through collaboration with other departments and participating in student development work across campus.

  • Serve on various campus task forces and committees.

  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Student Life.



Required Knowledge and Skills:



  • Master's degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or related field

  • 3-5 years of work-related experience in student engagement work is required
