Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma

Experience: Min. of 1-year related experience and/or training in a related human services field

Supervises: None

Summary: Doulas are a vital asset for improving pregnancy, birth, and postpartum outcomes for women and a natural extension of the support circle that nurtures the mother, expecting partners, and family. The doula's responsibilities include providing physical, emotional, and informational support to women enrolled in the Healthy Start Program. The doula will be responsible for educating pregnant women on techniques that improve comfort, answer questions and address concerns during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

Essential Functions:
• Providing the mother with emotional, physical, moral, and educational support, especially during times when the father and other close relatives are unavailable.
• Listening to the concerns and questions of the mother in a kind, non-judgmental way and offering the best possible advice based on received doula training.
• Attending prenatal meetings to get to know the mother and establish her birth preferences and other requirements.
• Remaining with the mother throughout labor and providing physical and emotional support during and after childbirth.
• Visiting the home of the mother once she has been discharged from the hospital and assisting with the care of the baby while the mother heals.
• Scheduling and attending all scheduled appointments with clients.
• Providing practical support and advice to the mother after childbirth, like organizing the nursery, running errands, and providing support with breastfeeding and meal preparation.
• Keeping up to date on childbirth support, birthing techniques, and pre-natal and post-natal care by conducting research, networking with other Doulas and mothers, and attending workshops and webinars.
• Assist in whatever way possible during the transition to motherhood.
• Complete Doula training and certification requirements in a timely manner and always use techniques learned to meet the job requirements of this position.
• Report any questions, issues, or concerns regarding client to program director or nurse mid-wife immediately and within the same day concern is received/ takes place.
• Attend ongoing, evidence-based training i.e. family planning, early education, social services, life-skills training, labor coaching, and breastfeeding education and counseling and other relevant trainings assigned by program director.
• The ability to answer questions and provide guidance in a non-judgmental way.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
• Comply with safety procedures in accordance with program requirements.
• Meet all deadlines by program director and federal partners.



Measurable Deliverables:
• Provide Doula services to 20-30 Healthy Start Tyler pregnant women participants.
• Meet documentation deadlines in accordance with program requirements.
• Schedule weekly visits with the client from the time of enrollment with HS (approximately twenty-four weeks)
• Attend child-birth classes with mother (minimum six classes/two hours a week)
• Attend courses offered through HS with mother
• Attend prenatal appointments with mother
• Attend the birth (minimum fourteen hours assisting mothers with birth)
• Schedule and attend three postpartum visits with mother
• Document client visits, interactions, outcomes and education provided to participants in Efforts to Outcomes as required by agency policy, procedures, and guidelines.
• Submit a synopsis of birth and three months postpartum encounters and enter in ETO.
• Increase client's knowledge and positive changes in attitude as measured by standardized tests.
• Participate in scheduled meetings and team decisions and operations.
• Participate in workshops, seminars, education/ training webinars, programs and activities that promote professional growth and development.
• Compile, prepare, submit and maintain accurate records, files, forms, and additional information in accordance with agency policies, licensing and/or contract requirements.
• Implement BCFS safety protocols at all times.
• Maintain BCFS HHS professional and ethical standards of conduct outlined in BCFS employee handbook including demonstrating respect for agency staff, children, and community members and complying with required dress code at all times.


Credentials, Skills and Abilities:
• Maintain current licenses including any certificates required for the position including, but not limited to: Driver's License, First Aid CPR AED, Doula certification
• Meet all federal and state regulatory guidelines and standards applicable to this position
• Pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug screens throughout employment.
• Provide proof of work eligibility status upon request.
• Pass a pre-employment and biennial criminal background checks.
• Available for on call and emergency situations.
• Drive a vehicle and comply with safety procedures in accordance to program requirements
• Demonstrate the ability to:
o Respond sensitively and competently to the service population's cultural and socio-economic characteristics
o Work in a fast-paced environment and maintain emotional control and professional composure at all times.
o Communicate effectively in writing and verbally in English (Spanish highly preferred)
o Organize and prioritize responsibilities and duties efficiently
o Provide crisis intervention according to training provided by BCFS HHS when needed to maintain a safe environment
o Maintain computer literacy required to meet the responsibilities of the position
o Maintain confidentiality in all areas of the service population and program operations.
