“The Prayer of a Disabled’s Heart” by Michele Sutphin Today God take this heart, Open it up and use it to make me a part, Let not my disability draw me away, Let me reach out to others, day after day, Let each person I see realize what I can do, That what I have inside of me, what helps me each day, is you, That you are the strength I receive, That all my hopes and how I believe, Will shine through in the abilities you have given, So that I too can go on living, That people will see smiles that are honest and true, That they won’t see handicaps but maybe eyes of brown, or blue, That when someone abuses my rights, That I won’t give in but take a stand and fight, That when someone with ignorance acts wrong towards me, Let me consider the source and feel sorry he does not think or see, That they will see willingness and desires just as they possess, That I too have the same rights to a decent life and happiness, That I may be a beacon to my fellow world community, That I will represent each and show what is beyond disabilities, That I will be the best I can possibly be, All this I pray from a heart that has no disability.
NOTE: No one’s heart is disabled for what it can hold deep inside. Love and faith which we each should hold within that heart are what makes us able to go beyond whatever disability we have. For those things that are most important, can never be taken away but only increased.
