Carrie's Prom

By Carrie Bloss

I am 17 years old and I live in a small town in Minnesota called Willmar.
I have spina bifida and walk with braces on my legs. I have some other very minor
problems like speech impairments that have been taken care of for the most part by
therapy.

My prom was in Friday May 5th. I had spent about 3 months finding just the right
dress, I found one about 2 months before prom at the local bridal shop, it was light pink
with beads on it. I spent all the money I had on it, $130. The color looked really good
on me because I have reddish hair. I spent another month picking out jewelry, I got
earrings, a necklace and a bracelet that all where silver and fake diamonds, they looked very
good with the dress.

I also spent a lot of time finding a date for my prom. I was
originally planning on going with my boyfriend Matt, but we broke up and that fell through, so I
thought it was better going with a boyfriend and choose a close guy friend. He is extremely
nice and also invited me to his prom as he attends another school. The morning of prom
started off great, juniors and seniors didn't have to go to school. My date called me
early and told me that his tux never came in to the prom shop! I was just about to flip
when I sucked it in and said to myself that there was nothing I could do about it. He went
and scrounged up a fairly nice looking tux, and looked very nice. I was very
surprised with the nice looking outfit he got on such short notice.

A bunch of my friends came over at about 2:30 that afternoon and helped me get my hair ready for prom. We pulled a few strands back and put some rhinestones in my hair, I looked amazing! I also put make-up on, something rarely do. I thought I looked amazing and so did just about everyone else at my house!
My mom took lots of pictures. So did my dad also did as he is a semi-professional
photographer. We took pictures in my back yard by flowering trees and also by the lake.

After that, my friends and I went to go and pick up the flowers I had ordered weeks before., They were small white orchids, they where so beautiful. When I got back from the flower shop my date Nick
finally had arrived at my house. He got dressed and my parents took MORE pictures. My
mom made supper for me and my friends and we ate in the back yard of my house. She
also had a special dessert ready, a mint cake with vanilla ice cream.

At 5:00 p.m. my grandma came with the car I was planning on taking to prom. At my school, what you
arrive in at the grand march is almost as important as what you are wearing. My grandma's
car is a brand new ford Taurus. We waited in line for grand march in our cars for about 1
hour talking to our friends and taking pictures the whole time. When we got to the
grand march line I got really nervous but I just walked out there and acted like I wasn't
nervous at all. We walked through the crowd and also through the theater where all kinds of
people took pictures of us.

During prom I danced with about 6 different boys, really
nice ones that I have always liked, and I was very surprised that they asked me to dance. I
talked to lots of people and had a lot of fun. Our school always hosts an after prom
party. This year it was at the local bowling alley and entertainment center, the whole place
was rented out and everything was free to us. We played lots of planned games such as a
smaller version of "Who wants to be a millionaire" and the Price Is Right game Plinko!, I
won almost 50 dollars! We also sang kareoke and played bingo, in which my date won the
games in a row and a bunch of money. At about 3 AM a hypnotist came and did a show.
I was chosen to go up and be hypnotized! Evidently all the people chosen took a
"trip to mars" and "went fishing". I wish I could have seen it! At about 5 o clock AM it
was time to head home. All my friends and myself had an amazing time and I can't wait till
next years prom!
