The Dream Society

About two years ago I got a job at a very well known non-profit organization for people with disabilities.  Just out of college I thought I had landed my dream job, however, about two months after starting I realized it wasn’t. As a person with a disability it’s difficult to find a job, even with a college degree, so I tried to keep my job as long as possible. Read It!

What It Is Really Like To Be Disabled

In December of 2004, after five and one-half years on a waiting list, I moved into a two-room cell of solitary confinement (two claustrophic rooms, plus an equally-claustrophobic full bath), at a so-called "community" for disabled people and seniors. Upon moving in, the first thing I noticed was that there was a completely
dysfunctional "community", dangerously isolating and existing below the poverty line. Read It!

I'm a Writer, Thanks to a Brain Tumor
by Bill Asenjo, PhD, CRC

I am constantly intrigued by the many paths writers have plod in previous lifetimes. For example, I became a freelance writer thanks to a brain tumor. Let me explain.

Does This Count?

A Short Story by Amy Auxier

I find that in 37 years of life I am still searching. I am searching for that one thing that will make me complete and whole. I want that feeling of total peace with everything in my life. I don’t even know what it is that I am looking for, after all I am married to a wonderful guy that doesn’t try to change who I am.  I have two beautiful children that are teenagers and they aren’t drinking and doing drugs and impregnating naïve young women.  I have a house that is a sweet canvas that I can do anything I want with; parents that live close and love me, animals all around. Something is missing that is supposed to be very important.  I don’t have a purpose for my life.  I don’t even have a career at this time.  I don’t have an identity so to speak.  I feel like a failure in life.  What am I here for? onto concrete. I broke approx. 20 bones, some in eight places. The doctors told me it would be at least 2 1/2 years before I would sit

Break Through Self-Doubt and Fear
by Simma Lieberman

Self-doubt and fear interfere with our ability to achieve or set goals. Self-doubt and fear are the voices in our head telling us, "You'll never succeed, so why try?" and "who do you think you are?" Self-doubt and fear are also what make us listen to those voices and decide to give up before we get started. Read It!

Out of Sight by Josette Coppola

The street sign was so close, no more than a few feet above her head, but it might as well have been in the next town.  The woman could see only bits and pieces of white characters against a blue background, their images blurred to the ambiguous shapes of clouds floating in the sky, waiting for imagination to give them form.  As a little girl, she had studied clouds high overhead and tried to find secret messages hidden within their billows and swirls, certain that there was something important to be learned from these delicate patterns if only she could detect it.  Read It!

Shattered Glass by Lisa Steffen

There I stood, standing in the mist of shattered glass.  Who I was, my perceptions of self, was broken into a thousand pieces lying on the floor.  Then you came, crushing the shards beneath your heals, leaving a fine gray powder for me to clean up.  Leaving me alone on my knees, collecting the remains of my face, trying to glue the bits and parts into some semblance of reality.
