Job Description:

Police Officer enforces laws, ordinances, regulations, and policies. Investigates and documents crimes. Serves arrest and search warrants. Enforces laws and investigates traffic collisions. Responds to emergencies. Patrols university property and works at special events. Collects, preserves, and prepares evidence in court. Testifies in court. Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) by fulfilling training and reporting obligations related to campus safety protocols. Performs noncriminal routine law enforcement functions such as traffic control, parking enforcement, and building security. May serve as an armed courier transporting cash, negotiable instruments and other items, materials and documents to and from various financial institutions and campus offices. Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position. 

Required Education: High School diploma or GED.


Skills:



  • Ability to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty, and staff

  • Ability to operate technical equipment, i.e., radar, breathe alcohol analyzers, mobile computers and radio, lock systems, etc.

  • Ability to complete moderately complex administrative paperwork

  • Ability to produce reports and complete work within deadlines

  • Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions 

  • Knowledge of police procedures for gathering information involving crime and incident investigations, reporting, and documentation

  • Strong initiative to solve problems

  • Ability to speak, read and write clear, concise English    

  • Basic math and computer skills 


Required Certifications or Licenses:



  • Must pass Oklahoma Law Enforcement Retirement System (OLERS) physical, as well as physical fitness test, pass standardized written aptitude test, pass MMPI and CPI test.

  • Must be able to successfully complete OUPD initial training program.

  • Must be certified as a Peace Officer by the Oklahoma Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) within 6 months of hire 

  • Valid Oklahoma Driver's License upon hire 

  • Obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification through the department      


Advertised Physical/Environmental Requirements:



  • Frequently communicates.

  • Ability to walk, climb stairs, and stand for extended periods of time.

  • See including color, depth perceptions and clarity.

  • Willingness to wear and maintain uniforms.  

  • Shift work. Must be able to work overnights, evenings, weekend, holidays, extended shifts (12+ hours), and mandatory
    overtime.

  • Constant exposure to adverse weather conditions.  

  • May be exposed to hazardous materials


Other Requirements:



  • Hiring contingent upon successful completion of police background check, including polygraph exam, and fingerprint clearance from FBI and Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation

  • No felony convictions, prior protective orders, domestic violence convictions or other crimes of a violent nature

  • Not currently subject to an order of CLEET, or other state certifying authority, revoking, suspending, or accepting a voluntary surrender of peace officer certification

  • No criminal charges pending in any state, tribal or federal court.

  • Not participating in a deferred sentence for a crime of moral turpitude

  • Must be 21 years of age or older by hire date


Departmental Preferences:



  • 24+ months public safety, law enforcement, military experience, or Collegiate Officers Program graduate.

  • Bilingual


Supervision:



  • Security Officers. 1-5 individuals in this title
