Job Summary

The GOM Development Subsurface team is seeking a highly qualified and motivated individual for the position of Staff Operations Geologist. The successful candidate will primarily support the Gulf of Mexico Business Unit as well as Exploration projects while ensuring all wells are drilled safely, compliant with all regulations, and efficiently to meet defined well objectives in accordance with the Statement of Requirements (SOR) and meets all expectations of the New Wells Common Process. The Geologist, under minimal supervision, performs complex duties related to the planning and executing of Murphy's GOM drilling program. They must collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, utilizing their knowledge of well site geologist duties, drilling procedures, regulatory compliance to assist with development planning, drilling, and completions efforts for GOM projects. Aspects of the role include operation geology, well planning, internal/external reporting and interaction with regulatory agencies as well as collaboration with all asset teams.

Responsibilities


  • Support the construction of the SOR document ensuring the well objectives, data acquisition, and all relevant overburden characterization elements are contained
  • Assist in the creation of pre-drill risk registers and ensure mitigation and contingency plans are created for all geological risks (shallow hazards, pore pressure, well stability, etc)
  • Coordinate shallow hazards assessment with vendor, asset and drilling team
  • Demonstrated experience in Geoscience, with a passion for working in 24/7 operational settings.
  • The candidate should be proficient in G&G workflows and would liaise with drilling to communicate subsurface complexities and help to define appropriate analogs for well planning and costs.
  • Communicate geological insights to the field team during drilling operations.
  • Ensure appropriate resourcing, deployment and supervision of well-site geologists offshore through active engagement with suppliers
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to interact effectively with a broad range of technical specialists and partners as necessary, as is the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to create integrated products.
  • Analyze and interpret geological data to guide drilling operations and make real-time decisions
  • Support selection, coordination and deployment of wide range of geological services (mudlogging, coring, wireline, LWD, biostratigraphy, fluids) and on-site personnel to ensure successful geologic/reservoir data collection
  • Help interpret and select formation tops, casing, and core points per SOR and appropriate decision trees.
  • Execute geosteering plans for drilling operations to ensure optimal well placement
  • Work effectively with other departments and stakeholders to ensure alignment and successful execution of drilling operations.
  • The candidate will act as a link between all disciplines to ensure that business processes are effectively implemented and that timelines are met.
  • Collaborate with drilling engineers to optimize drilling parameters and identify potential risks
  • Maintain accurate records, documentation, and data archiving from drilling and completions operations
  • Ensure efficient delivery of the data acquisition program and data quality per agreed terms and the security of all sensitive subsurface data and well results

Qualifications/Requirements

  • BSc Degree or equivalent in Geology or related sciences
  • A minimum of 14 years of relevant experience in deepwater offshore wellsite and geological operations. At least 5 of those years as a Wellsite Geologist offshore
  • Basic interpretation skills of real-time data, open hole Wireline/LWD data, mudlogging data, and drilling information
  • Experience with well planning
  • Proficiency in real-time pore pressure fracture gradient monitoring & ability to incorporate real-time data for pore pressure fracture gradient interpretation
  • Exposure and Experience with: Open Hole Wireline Logging (including rotary coring and fluid sampling), Open Hole LWD, Conventional core operations, Mudlogging, Real-time operations
  • Support root cause analysis for any NPT event related to subsurface operations (Orange category) and ensure these learnings are distributed through the appropriate venues and stakeholders
Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar with creation of operational decision trees
  • Experience with deep water Gulf of Mexico exploration and development wells is highly desirable
  • International operations experience, Southeast Asia and West Africa
