Job Summary



The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at IU Indianapolis is looking for an energetic person who will be an integral part of a team in an educational setting. The position, which reports to the Chair, requires technical expertise to repair and to assist in replacing departmental instruments. The Engineer supervises 2 employees responsible for lab operation, stores, and planning.


Department-Specific Responsibilities


  • Provides instrumental and operations leadership, maintenance, and support for the full complement of instrumentation, specialized facilities, and administrative oversight of our capital equipment base.

  • Supports the research labs.

  • Provides departmental technical maintenance. Building maintenance concerns or requests originate from this position, which ensures that repairs are completed, and the department and building are in good condition and operating effectively.

  • Liaises with campus facilities.

  • Identifies and provides sources of training for departmental students, staff, and faculty on instrument operation and promotes best practices/standards of operation.

  • Supervises technical employees and ensures our instrumentation and support functions operate synergistically.

  • Provides limited computer support to faculty and staff, which is applicable to instrumentation-based computers and specialized software packages.

General Responsibilities

  • Designs and constructs electronics and/or electronic systems in support of research experiments (such as intricate analog and digital circuitries).

  • Provides estimates for labor and material costs associated with system design and construction; oversees the construction and installation of systems; participates in proposals for future construction projects; develops project objectives, budgets, work plans and implementation strategies.

  • Consults with faculty, staff, and students on problems associated with design and construction of research instrumentation as well as research systems programming.

  • Repairs, tests and adjusts instrumentation to ensure optimal working order, including performing high-level repairs with extended reversed engineering; communicates with users, such as instructing on the safe handling of the device in question and explaining the problems and solutions.

  • Maintains and prepares documentation for electronics and/or electronic systems and improves the performance of existing research systems.

EDUCATION



Required



  • Bachelor's degree preferably in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, or related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE



Preferred



  • Experience in scientific instrument operation, maintenance, repair, and/or use that is related to the chemical or other physical sciences.

  • Ability to carry out planned preventative maintenance and time-sensitive troubleshooting of problems.




Working Conditions / Demands



This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
