Introduction
Join a well-funded and fast-moving startup in climate biotech! Elysia Creative Biology uses genetically engineered plants to solve one of the world's biggest problems: methane from agriculture. The single greatest source of ag methane--digestion of feed by livestock--accounts for more global warming than shipping, air travel, and deforestation put together. To solve this problem we need a technology that reaches every corner of the earth quickly and easily. Our answer? Plants. By genetically engineering methane elimination tech into the feed crops that livestock already eat, we make it completely seamless for farmers around the world to eliminate their worst climate pollutant.
Elysia is the only company in the world working directly with the plants that animals eat a billion tons of every year, because we believe this is the way to solve the problem at full scale: 100% enteric methane elimination everywhere on earth. We are building a visionary team that shares our uncompromising goal and isn't afraid to do hard stuff to get there. This Plant Scientist role join Elysia as we expand the team, and will work closely with a genetic engineer and analytical chemist to move additional technologies through our pipeline.
Responsibilities
This Plant Scientist's role will be approximately 50% support and 50% primary science. The right candidate is looking to work as part of a close-knit team and thrives on learning new skills in a fast-changing environment.
Support: Curate seed and biological material collections; oversee plant growth facilities; manage laboratory organization, compliance, and stocking needs for plant characterization work; oversee at least one junior technician.
Science: Design and run genetic characterization experiments for crop and model species of transgenic plants; analyze phenotype and genotype for complex genetic constructs; conduct plant transformations; work closely with a genetic engineering scientist to design and clone new genetic constructs; work close with an analytics scientist to execute sample preparation for chemical analysis.
Qualifications
Super creative (so important we put it right in the name)
Minimum of MS in a relevant field or equivalent experience; we value nontraditional sources of expertise
Documented experience of extreme problem solving and success as a highly independent worker
Must be or aspire to become an extraordinary science communicator
On-the-ground experience in agriculture, climate, and/or conservation is a strong plus
