Position Summary:

Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center is an operation of National Audubon Society. The 200-acre wildlife sanctuary is in Cedar Hill, TX, in southwestern Dallas County. The property is jointly owned by the City of Cedar Hill, National Audubon Society, and the local Audubon Dallas Chapter. The building is owned and managed by the National Audubon Society. The C.E. Doolin Visitor Center includes classrooms, indoor bird viewing, meeting space, offices and a nature gift and bookstore. The site includes over three miles of hiking trails, a children’s play area, demonstration gardens and picnic area. The center and the surrounding grounds are open year-round, attracting nature enthusiasts from throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Being a part of the Audubon team means making a difference for birds and conservation.


Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center (DCAC) seeks an energetic, detail-oriented, self-starter to oversee the efforts of the front desk during the center’s open hours and special events. The Senior Center Assistant will engage the community and steward individuals and organizations to support the center and its mission and support daily and seasonal center operations. This position reports to the Operations Manager and works directly with guests and vendors to ensure a positive experience.


The position requires a Tuesday-Saturday, 8:30am to 5:30pm schedule with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Flexibility in the schedule is required in working at least one Sunday shift per month, and occasional evenings as needed for programs and facility rental coverage.


Compensation:


$18.00 - $19.00 / hour


Essential Functions:
  • Deliver excellent customer service for front desk and visitor services.

  • Responsible for opening and closing tasks for each shift.

  • Assist Operations Manager with administrative tasks, including but not limited to, drafting, and maintaining written standard operating procedures and administrative checklists, managing retail inventory, shipping online gift shop orders, data entry, correspondence to donors and members.

  • Assist Operations Manager with revenue-producing activities, including gift shop, plant sales, facility rentals, memberships, hiking trail reservations, programs, and events.

  • Provide feeding care to DCAC animal ambassadors based on approved schedule and under guidance of DCAC staff.

  • Assist program staff with communications messaging through social media, newsletters, mass e-mails, online marketing, and onsite marketing.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for individual and group volunteers; recruit, screen and interview volunteer applicants, gauging interest, and suitability; ensure ongoing engagement and communication with volunteers, including recognition and appreciation efforts; manage the volunteer database and track hours.

  • Greet and guide vendors and guests during rental and event set up, and administer and complete end of facility rental check list.

  • Assist with building and property needs as they arise, with light janitorial duties and light maintenance needs; maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and documentation of onsite chemicals.

  • Light trail maintenance as needed, including carrying out trash.

  • Train volunteers on front desk services.

  • Attend off-site community events as a representative of DCAC.

  • Promote equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles through all facets of Audubon’s work.

  • Other job-related duties as required.


  • Qualifications and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required (Associate degree preferred) and at least one year of demonstrated office experience required.  An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.  

  • Must demonstrate ability to be reliable and punctual while able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent attention to detail, time-management and organizational skills, sound judgment under pressure.

  • Capacity to work easily and effectively with a wide range of people, build relationships, be diplomatic and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the dynamics of a complex organization.

  • Self-starter with a strong collaborative work ethic and ability to work independently while elevating the team and center.

  • Desire to work with diverse communities not typically engaged in conservation efforts.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership with interpersonal skills, critical thinking skills, and a problem-solving attitude.

  • Experience and familiarity with natural history, outdoor education, and conservation a plus.

  • At least one year of customer service or retail sales experience preferred. Experience with retail inventory a plus.

  • Ability to lift 30 lbs., and to hike up to four miles on varying terrain with or without accommodation.

  • Must possess valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.

  • A strong commitment to the mission, values, and programs of Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center and the National Audubon Society.

  • Basic computer knowledge with Shopify POS, Microsoft products, and Canva
