Job Description:

Under limited supervision the Engineering Tech will be capable of performing customer survey and installations and act as a first response troubleshoot and issue resolution expert for all Comcast Enterprise Business Services customer premise equipment and related systems (Metro-Ethernet/Cell Backhaul) in accordance with Comcast procedures and practices. Additionally, the Engineering Tech will manage the optical network route and site planning, equipment deployment planning and management, and basic physical design of Metro Ethernet network instances in multiple transport sites within the region.

• Prepare and maintain customer survey documentation (facilities, systems and components) with a high degree of accuracy.
• Install and test Metro Ethernet customer connectivity, systems and network elements per commercial services policies, procedures & maintenance programs.
• Schedule and manage, in conjunction with National support teams, equipment activations, customer-affecting network maintenance - develops documents of customer networks for network users.
• Rapidly & accurately assess customer outage situation; Verify functional status of Comcast equipment on the premises.
• Determine nature of problem as local (powering, equipment failure, Comcast cabling, customer equipment) or remote.
• Communicate with support teams to confirm connectivity and customer according to operating and testing procedures.
• Complete service assurance documentation with high degree of accuracy.
• Represents Regional Comcast interests with LEC, RBOC and ISP providers to ensure timely delivery of circuits.
• Contact for commercial services, Region customer care, and outside plant construction on the delivery of network connectivity and performance.
• Develop and implement test and acceptance criteria for optical network elements and coordinate testing of optical interconnection between CRAN & customer premises.
• Develop requirements for and maintain appropriate inventory or network spare equipment for rapid restoration.
• Meet with potential customers, design solutions, work with vendors on BOM/pricing and implement solution, being adaptable to customer need changes.
• As part of a service oriented organization, perform any and all other duties as assigned.
• Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance.
• Complete assigned projects and reports on time and on budget.
• Comply with all local, state and federal regulations: FCC, OSHA, etc.
• Participate in On Call rotation to support area operations.
• Operate and maintain assigned test equipment and systems properly & effectively.
• Interface effectively with Region & Division engineering staff and equipment vendors.
• Maintain and configure network devices; hubs, switches and routers.
• Attend regular training and stay current regarding technical knowledge.
• Assist with new product introduction & provide service assurance SME support to cross functional efforts
• Perform related duties as assigned.


Required Skills:
• Ability to operate independently & effectively in the field with complex optical high speed network operations required.
• Proven experience designing, deploying, troubleshooting and maintaining optical network hardware required.
• Proficient knowledge of cable system and network operations preferred.
• Working knowledge of & experience with common layer 2 technologies (e.g. Gigabit Ethernet, ATM, SONET, PPP/SONET) required.
• Working knowledge of & experience with VoIP, Multicast, Content Networking, Firewalls, VLANs, and VPNs required.
• Ability to use basic cable installation tools, hand tools, diagnostic tools and test equipment required.
• Ability to use Fiber Optic test equipment including required
o Fiber scope
o Cleaning kits
o Light meter
o Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)
• Able to identify AC/DC powering systems with standby required.
• Ability to perform job from high places (on ladders and/or poles) required.
• Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and various state and local codes including G.O. 95 and G.O. 128, (when applicable) preferred
• Ability to read/edit general system layouts from blueprints required
• Knowledge of Comcast products and services preferred
• Ability to comply with safety procedures and requirements required
• Ability to effectively communicate with customers and other employees required
• Ability to integrate available consumer electronics with all Comcast products required
• Ability to work independently required
• Knowledge of policies and procedures for installation activities required
• Proficient knowledge of Fiber Optic Transport and protocols preferred, such as
• MPLS
• VPLS
• SONET
• Knowledge of routers, hubs, switches required
• Strong project management skills are required.
• Ability to work on a computer and use MS Office applications required
• Proficient in the use of Internet browsers, plug-ins, and search engines required

Training/Licenses/Certifications:
• Certified Network CommTech 4 preferred.
• Valid drivers license and satisfactory driving record
• High school diploma or equivalent required
