Duties & Responsibilities

The lveczky lab is looking for a Research Assistant to run day-to-day lab operations and to help us develop and build new instrumentation. We are interested in how the brain learns and generates motor skills, and are looking for a motivated person interested in neuroscience, who is willing to acquire and/or apply skills in instrumentation design, computer programming, electronics, animal handling, and histology. As a member of our research team you would assist in designing and building equipment for electrophysiological experiments and automated animal training. The latter will involve developing, constructing, and assembling training cages for our experimental subjects, outfitting them with sensors and actuators, and deploying them in our animal facility. The work will require machining and assembling parts (training will be provided), electronics and computer programming.

This position will also be expected to take care of research animals, maintain laboratory equipment, and oversee day-to-day lab operations, including ordering basic supplies and reagents, implementing lab safety standards and organizing the lab. May be able to pursue a research project independently, but within specific guidelines and subject to review by supervisor or other research staff. Potential to be asked to instruct others in basic laboratory techniques.

This position is required to work with and handle animals. May be required to lift, move, and transport related laboratory equipment. May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials.


Basic Qualifications












Five or more years of experience in neurobiology, math, physics, or computer science field required. Relevant coursework may count towards experience. Computer programming skills, and familiarity with Matlab and/or other programming languages (C#, Python) are required.


Additional Qualifications




Demonstrated abilities in basic laboratory techniques, especially electronics would be helpful, but are not required. Excellent organizational and multitasking skills and the ability to work independently are desired. Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills are required.
