This position is responsible for coordinating or assisting with sales tax functions for specific legal entities within the Harland Clarke Holdings enterprise and the product lines for those entities in all states. The mix of sales tax issues may include various forms of specialty printing, advisory services and software-as-a-service offerings to financial institutions, office hardware/software sales and maintenance services, and various forms of advertising products and services. This position is subject to a matrix management arrangement, but primarily reports to the Manager, Sales Tax Controversies.
Key Duties / Responsibilities
Sales Tax Audit Defense (25%)—Support field audit requirements for designated entities and product lines, including auditor meetings, responses to information requests, coordinating cross-functional personnel/requirements, initial research of taxability issues, and preparation of any required workpapers.
Sales Tax Data Management (25%)—Manage sales tax data extraction, manipulation, and tax return compliance requirements for designated entities—including the coordination of data extract/maintenance requirements with IT personnel; the design and development of Excel solutions to manipulate extracted data; the preparation of workpapers to support VDA, ASC450, SOX, and similar requirements; the preparation of tax-return outsourcing data files; and performing various sales tax accounting requirements (including journal entries and reconciliations).
Sales Tax Information Support (25%)—Serve as front-line response to internal and external inquiries about sales tax decisions/policies, invoice-specific sales tax data, and exemption certificates for designated entities. Resolve all sales tax notices, including coordination of investigation with outsource service provider, payment, and administrative requirements.
Sales Tax System Support (25%)—Assist with the testing of new sales tax system functionality, troubleshooting of existing configuration issues, and developing tax-related training materials.

Education & Knowledge Required
Bachelors in Accounting with at least three years of work experience in multi-state sales tax, emphasizing consultative roles (including sales tax audit defense).
Experience / Skills / Abilities Required
Three years of prior public accounting experience, five years of private company tax accounting experience, or five years of sales tax administrative agency experience required. Experience in public accounting is highly desirable.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required. Proficiency with Microsoft Access or other database applications is highly desirable.
Familiarity with sales tax compliance processes and software is required.
Flexibility in managing multiple competing tasks with loosely defined deliverables and rigid deadlines is required.
This position does not supervise staff, but is responsible for overseeing the outsourcing requirements and relationship with the Company’s sales tax outsourcing partner. This position also requires an appropriate authoritative tone when dealing with cross-functional personnel and outside individuals.
Communication & Contacts Required
Sales tax staff are primarily located in San Antonio, Texas, but certain staff may be located in alternate locations. In alternate locations outside San Antonio, staff will likely have nominal physical interaction with other sales tax personnel.
This position involves minimal travel.
