Data Science is core to what Nielsen does, and our research projects have high visibility in directly affecting the results of our business and our clients.   This position is in the Audio Behavioral Methods team within Nielsen’s Global Data Science organization.  The Behavioral Methods team provides leadership and expertise across the Nielsen Company to develop innovative, statistically sound, and cost effective research methodologies in support of the strategic business initiatives.

The associate will contribute to and lead Behavioral Research projects, with a focus on improving respondent cooperation, improving demographic representation and optimizing data collection approaches for Nielsen panels and surveys. The associate will be expected to use his or her expertise in quantitative survey methods to provide input on an array of research tasks.  

 

Job Purpose

 



  • Develop test databases and statistically analyze sample performance and audience estimates; identify and utilize the appropriate software and statistical applications needed to meet the needs of the project.




  • Help to design, implement and analyze experimental research tests of existing and alternative survey methods.  Assist with the assessment of costs, risks and benefits of these projects, as well as their system impact if implemented.




  • Assist with the design and management of experimental and analytic studies on survey measurement of radio and other audio entertainment sources among the general public.




  • Maintain and modify documentation and communications related to a complex incentive structure, sample flagging rules and mailing treatments.




  • Assist in the design and testing of new mailing materials, incentive approaches, survey forms, etc.




  • Prepare detailed project plans, written reports and statistical analyses describing findings from methodological survey research tests and secondary analyses.  This includes reports for internal purposes as well as reports for clients and other external uses.




  • Coordinate project progress on a daily basis to ensure that project timelines and goals are met in an effective and efficient manner.




  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations internally, to clients and/or at industry conferences on topics pertaining to Nielsen research activities and findings.




  • Participate in cross-functional project teams.  Provide research requirements to operational and application development teams to support research testing and implementation of tested methodologies



 

Required Qualifications



  • Master’s, or Doctorate Degree with at least 1 year of experience in Social or Behavioral Sciences field such as Survey Methodology, Statistics/Sampling, Psychology, Sociology or related field, or Bachelors with 3+ years research experience.




  • Knowledge of survey or similar research operations including questionnaire design, sampling, and survey administration.




  • Knowledge of multiple modes of data collection methods, including phone, mail and online surveys.




  • Understanding of measurement error in data collection methods with ability to mitigate using cost effective procedures.




  • Strong quantitative research and analysis skills including competence with statistical programming software (Python and R preferred).




  • High motivation with demonstrated capacity to work on multiple projects with set deadlines, under pressure.




  • Collaborative team player with willingness and desire to work with cross-functional teams of varying sizes.




  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Project) and/or Google Applications (Docs, Sheets, etc.). Knowledge of MS Access and/or SQL is a strong plus.




  • Qualitative research and analysis skills (including cognitive interviews, in-depth interviews, focus groups, etc.) is a plus.




  • Knowledge of Data Science tools and methodologies, such as experience with unstructured data sets, APIs, machine learning, and information visualization is a plus.




  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to effectively influence, negotiate and communicate within and across various levels in the organization.




  • Able to work independently.
