Purpose of the role:

To maintain and develop a list of books covering all areas of Education research. The editor will identify, commission and bring to publication titles and series in all the formats that we publish; as well as such other areas as may be agreed, in order to effectively deliver on financial and forward program targets.

Management Responsibility:


One direct report, Editorial Assistant for the Education program.


Job Duties

Key tasks:


Commission new projects and series in line with list strategy and financial targets agreed with the line manager. Within this:


  • Develop and maintain a network of authors and advisers, with regular campus and conference travel in the US and overseas, where relevant.


  • Keep abreast of key trends in the relevant markets and to conduct appropriate market research in order to identify competitive and profitable publishing opportunities.


  • Assess and develop publishing proposals for new projects, new editions and possible new series, on the basis of market feedback, to deliver competitive and profitable products in line with list strategy.


  • Explore appropriate ways to publish the best long form work in your subject areas, taking advantage of the different publication formats and business models offered throughout Palgrave, ie monographs, edited collections, Palgrave Pivot, Handbooks, advanced textbooks and major reference works (MRWs).


  • Achieve buy-in to publishing projects from colleagues, including soliciting, and dealing constructively with, feedback from key stakeholders in editorial, publishing services, marketing and sales.


  • Negotiate publishing contracts with authors to ensure products are profitable.


  • Responsibility for devising and overseeing the strategy for US Palgrave Education, in conjunction with editorial colleagues globally.

  • Meet revenue-based annual commissioning targets


Overall responsibility for the delivery of the forward program of new titles and new editions in Education to agreed publication and profitability targets. Within this:


  • Work with authors to ensure timely delivery of manuscripts and to meet annual handover targets for new titles (and where appropriate to effectively control any problems, changes or cost implications for products.)


  • Oversee the monitoring and scheduling of the forward publishing program (including regular delivery chasing of typescripts, author forms, relevant permissions etc.)


Liaise with appropriate Marketing and Sales colleagues to ensure the list is profitable (eg, overseeing the provision of information/ copy required for promotional and selling activities, forecast discussions, etc).


Delegate appropriate administrative and editorial tasks in support of the above to the Editorial Assistant.


Any other reasonable task required by the line manager.



Key relationships:

  • Internal relationships with Global Editorial, Sales, Marketing, Rights/Foreign Rights and Publishing Services colleagues.

  • External relationships with authors, series editors, reviewers, academics, and outside suppliers.


Job Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in relevant experience; academic background in Education or related subject preferred.


  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).

  • Substantial knowledge of and experience in the academic / educational market and publishing.

  • Excellent organisational skills with an ability to balance priorities.

  • Ability to delegate appropriately.

  • Ability to build strong and effective working relationships with colleagues and external contacts.

  • Ability to work unsupervised and to use own initiative.

  • Self-motivated with a calm, professional approach and a can-do attitude.

  • Understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)


  • Independently commissioning projects.

  • Proven organisational skills.

  • Ability to multi-task and work to tight deadlines.

  • Previous experience of working in a team as well as independently.

  • Experience of building effective working relationships.

  • Ability to think creatively and solve problems.

  • Experience and knowledge of the editorial process.
