The cooperative education students will have exposure to product and process development, design, research and development, computer applications and technical documentation. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide an opportunity for the student to conduct an individual project and assume responsibilities similar to those expected by an entry-level team member with similar technical training.
A typical Work Program for a Materials/Biomedical Engineering Co-Operative Education Student in the Biomaterials Group at Zimmer Biomet: Within the first few weeks of the first term the co-op student’s assignments will include orientation to company procedures, education of laboratory and chemical safety issues, and exposure to design of experiments by aiding in completion and documentation of a validation study. The remainder of the co-op students first term and subsequent terms will be spent working on projects related to one or more of the following topics: Metals Ceramic – Bioactive and structural Polymers – Non-Resorbable and Resorbable Composites Coating Technologies The co-op will be responsible for projects assigned by a Project Manager which may entail design, manufacturing, and quality control of product/process. For each assigned project, the student will be responsible for researching background information on the project topic, developing an experimental protocol, and documenting experimental results in a final report format to be reviewed by pertinent departments including quality engineering, regulatory affairs, and manufacturing engineering. The co-op student will gain experience in various analytical methods for characterizing material properties as well as manufacturing methods for various orthopedic devices. The co-op student may also assist in other areas as needed.

- Must be actively enrolled in an academic program for the entire duration of the assignment. - Must be currently pursuing a degree in: Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, Macromolecular Science and Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering-- with a Biomaterials focus. -Must have completed at least sophomore year in school.
Each cooperative education student is required to make a presentation to the Biomaterials Department summarizing the work completed in his/her co-op. The work supervisor will evaluate the student’s job performance and progress on the evaluation form provided by the student’s educational sponsor at the end of each cooperative education session.
