Department OverviewWGBH radio and WGBH News seeks to inform, educate and enlighten our audience on both the news of the day and the news in context through in-depth, high quality journalism using the best tools and methods of the craft. WGBH News seeks always to report on and facilitate discussion of the news with integrity, fairness, balance, accuracy and civility, WGBH News also seeks to tell the stories of and allow expression of the diversity of voices that make up our entire community.Position OverviewThis position will report directly to the Managing Editor for News and will perform radio production duties for WGBH radio's news and talk programs, specifically for Morning Edition, as well as creating content for other platforms including on-line and social networking. Primary responsibilities will be to identify, research and assist in writing continuity for the host of Morning Edition from all available sources. This would include call-outs for live interviews and setting up content for the following day's broadcast. The Radio Production Assistant will assist in updating content to the WGBH News website, NPR-One, and other content based digital sources. Work on special projects and breaking news stories may be assigned as determined by the Managing Editor or the Morning Edition Producer. On occasion, this may include assisting on-air pledge and fundraising activities.
The shift will be 4AM-12PM, Monday - Friday.
Responsibilities include the following:
- Gathering news materials from multiple sources
- Monitoring for breaking news stories
- Writing and editing copy for radio newscast
- Gathering, cutting, and editing audio for radio newscast
- Editing long-form audio interviews
- Coordinating with managers, editors, and reporters
- Managing program's web and social media presence
- Conducting interviews with newsmakers
- Booking guests for host interviews
- Scheduling program segments
- Maintaining internal planning calendars
- Repurposing news material for other WGBH programs
- Updating newsroom on daily news coverage
- Other tasks as needed

Skills RequiredThe ideal candidate will have at least 1-3 years experience in either print or radio journalism. S/he will understand the NPR style and demonstrate strong production experience and comfort with using a variety of audio and text editing software. The candidate must have demonstrated a strong understanding of strict journalistic principles and have proven ability to present balanced reporting, fairness and fidelity to facts. Candidate must be able to generate story ideas on his/her own and be familiar with the civic, political, economic and environmental issues in the Boston and Massachusetts region. This position requires a strong writing and digital editing skills and the ability to work within a growing newsroom, cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure.Skill RequiredThe ideal candidate will have at least 1-3 years experience in either print or radio journalism.
