POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the mission of The Medical Center of Aurora by optimizing the quality of life of all those served by expanding beyond the traditional focus on medical needs to the needs of the whole person. Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Laboratory Assistant has primary responsibility for the efficient organization and effectiveness of the specimen procurement, receipt and processing area. The employee will provide services addressing age-related techniques in specimen collection and care focusing on neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. This involves greeting patients within The Medical Center of Aurora, answering the telephone, answering questions regarding specimen collection and time elements, interfacing between other hospitals, hospital departments, physicians, medical offices and reference laboratories, obtaining blood specimens, providing quality service, and performing general laboratory duties. When need arises, will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Phlebotomy Certification preferred, BLS Certification required within 30 days.
EDUCATION: Completion of a Certified Phlebotomy program preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Experience in a hospital laboratory is desired, but not necessary.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: The Laboratory Assistant must have good customer service and communication skills. Basic computer skills are needed.
DEGREE OF SUPERVISION REQUIRED: Involves general guidance and direction by the Director of the Laboratory, Laboratory Assistant Supervisor, and/or other Laboratory Coordinator/Supervisors. Employee will be expected to perform most job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
