Job Summary:

An exciting opportunity awaits a passionate and inspired leader to assume a central leadership role in driving both 3M business growth and societal impact via Sustainability.  3M's Sustainability and Product Stewardship department is actively pursuing transformational Sustainability leadership -- including establishing the Sustainability value of every 3M product and brand, helping employees and customers reach their Sustainability goals, and innovating t address some of the world's biggest challenges.  This new position will be part of a small, dedicated core team of individuals who work across the company to drive ne growth and societal impact for 3M by embedding environmental and social factors in our new product pipeline and establishing effective product positioning for Sustainability differentiation.

This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military environments to a 3M career.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide Sustainability subject matter expertise in support of 3M R&D/product development teams

  • Partner with Corporate R&D teams to embed Sustainability throughout new product introduction / commercialization process(es)

  • Create Sustainability practices, language, and tracking in our commercialization and NPI processes

  • Establish enterprise-wide approach to identifying and communicating the Sustainability value statements for 3M products and platforms, as part of the commercialization process

  • Develop Sustainability tools and train employees to integrate Sustainability goals into new product commercialization

  • Benchmark and track NPI- related metrics & KPIs

  • Facilitate training and workshops for product development teams as part of launch/training plan

  • Partner with Life Cycle Management (LCM) team to ensure consistent approach to Sustainability within LCM process

  • Work with 3M businesses to establish key metrics and definition of success for Sustainability in product development, and develop executive reporting process and plan

  • Maintain awareness of global Sustainability trends and tools, share updates and implications broadly to relevant 3M groups, and update product development approaches and tools accordingly

  • Participate in the development and execution of 3M’s global Sustainability strategy, plans and goals

Basic Qualifications:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience working in product development in a private, public, government or military environment

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a cross-functional leadership role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical degree and background

  • New Product Development experience, preferably within 3M

  • Familiarity with sustainability issues and trends

  • Knowledge of and experience with 3M operations, processes, business development, and navigating our global matrix

  • Knowledge of 3M initiatives, teams and systems related to sustainability and experience working directly with teams on sustainability initiatives globally

  • Excellent communication, presentation and persuasion skills

  • Excellent Excel and data management skills

  • Advanced degree in a business, sustainability, scientific or engineering related program

  • Demonstrated strong collaboration skills

Location: Maplewood, MN

Travel: May include up to 25% domestic
