Position Summary
The overall objective of the Senior Accountant is to support the Statutory and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) Insurance Accounting and Financial Reporting functions of Commercial & Government Markets. Responsibilities include preparation of journal entries and supporting schedules, reconciliation of key accounts and analysis of financial data included in the development of monthly and quarterly financial statements and in support of the financial audits. Finally, this Accountant will be integral in the identification, communication and implementation of key process improvement projects to enhance accounting and reporting controls and provide efficiencies in the financial reporting process.

To be successful in this position, the employee should possess a detail-oriented mindset to ensure accuracy of data contained in general ledger, account reconciliations and workpapers that support financial statements; as well as, develop a good understanding of multiple types of group insurance coverage to provide pertinent financial analysis to profit center management and product line strategic business units. In connection with Guardian's overall finance functions, the Senior Accountant will be required to interface with numerous Guardian associates both within and external to Commercial & Government Markets.

Candidate Responsibilities


  • Prepare journal entries & supporting schedules, including general ledger account analysis and reconciliations for both balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Prepare monthly analytical reports to assist in monthly close manager's review.
  • Prepare accurate and timely internal and external financial reporting to state regulators, corporate finance, actuarial teams and others, as required.
  • Provide guidance to resolve inquiries from other teams on the contents of the general ledger journal entries and activity.
  • Support tax, treasury and procurement functions, as required.
  • Identify, communicate and implement process improvements to enhance accounting and reporting controls and provide efficiencies.
  • Develop and maintain process and control documentation for the auditors and internal compliance.
  • Participate in projects, ensuring timely delivery of assigned tasks.
  • Support annual audit process.
  • Develop and maintain advanced financial reporting and analytical tools via PeopleSoft, Essbase, PeopleSoft Queries and MS Excel Pivot Tables and Macros.

Reporting Relationships
  • This position reports to the Lead Financial Analyst who, in turn, reports to the Director & subsidiary Controller.
Functional Skills


  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and/or Statutory accounting principles including experience in the preparation and filing of internal financial reporting and external quarterly and annual statutory statements and related schedules
  • Group Insurance Industry knowledge
  • Strong written and oral communication skills both internally and with external parties
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions using sound judgment

  • Strong knowledge in use of MS Excel
  • Working knowledge of Peoplesoft General Ledger a plus


Position Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree with a major in Accounting or Finance required
  • Certified Public Accountant Designation - preferred but not required
  • Minimum 4 years of related business experience in the Insurance Industry
