A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Sustainability, or Environmental Engineering
6-8 years of relevant and progressively responsible project experience
Interest in the “business” of planning and urban design
Demonstrated acumen developing, managing, and reporting workplans, fee proposals, and financial projections for complex multi-faceted projects
Motivated by opportunities for professional growth and energized by exposure to a broad range of project types and creative professionals
Highly motivated, hard-working professional who takes initiative, is highly attentive to details, and skilled at multi-tasking
Proven general knowledge of city planning, urban design, and architectural practice, including visioning, programming, site planning, public realm design, civil engineering, and planning for resilience
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to quickly develop a collegial rapport with all levels of employees, clients, and consultants
Proven ability in problem identification, problem solving and conflict resolution
Ability to be responsible for projects with limited senior management oversight
Project management position working closely with and reporting directly to City Design Practice Leader charged with overseeing NYC and DC City Design Practices
Commitment to making the world a better, more equitable, and more resilient place through the planning, design, and realization of high quality urban projects
Helps reconcile the goals and priorities of SOM with those of our clients while fostering opportunities for design and technical excellence, innovation in research and technology, and multi-faceted resilience
Prepares service agreements under supervision of City Design Practice Leader and in conjunction with SOM Legal Counsel and Project Partner(s)
Maintains regular contact with client, external consultants and vendors
Documents and reports on project progress and profitability
Develops and maintains a Project Plan for each active project
Actively participates in SOM’s weekly Project Management meetings and provides regular updates via internal tracking and reporting protocols
Schedules all client meetings, records and issues minutes’ documents action items, and ensures timely follow-thru
Monitors services vis-à-vis the contact requirements and identifies changes in project scope, schedule or service that result in supplemental or additional services and bring such changes to the immediate attention of the City Design Practice Leader, the client and Project Partner
Under supervision of City Design Practice Leader and in conjunction with Project Accountant, ensures appropriate billings and pursues payment compliant with services agreement
Maintains and updates project data in a timely fashion to insure accurate reporting of earnings and accurate billings
Ensures project reports and staffing projections are accurate, up-to-date, reflective of needs, and commensurate with established fees.
Provides support to City Design Practice Leader for marketing and business development
Actively pursues opportunities for professional development
