Purpose Statement / Position Summary

This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center. The Cancer Nurse Navigator's primary function is assisting patients and families through the healthcare system with the goal of achieving optimal patient outcomes.  The Cancer Nurse Navigator will provide cancer patients and families with information addressing their concerns, including but not limited to financial, social services, education, treatment options and access to clinical trials.  The Cancer Nurse Navigator may serve as a care coordinator for multi-disciplinary teams.  The Cancer Nurse Navigator is a self-directed individual who is an expert practitioner with essential educator and case manager role components.   The Cancer Nurse Navigator works closely with the clinical staff, physicians, Tumor Boards and community resources.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job

  • Works as part of the multidisciplinary team addressing the needs of cancer patients, both inpatient and outpatient, and their families.  

  • Promotes a patient and family centered care environment for ethical decision making and advocacy for patients with cancer.

  • Coordinates activities to ensure delivery of quality patient care, the attainment of program objectives and promotion of the positive customer experience.

  • Ensures any communication is culturally sensitive.

  • Ability to be at work and be on time

  • Ability to follow company policies, procedures and directives

  • Ability to interact in a positive and constructive manner

  • Ability to prioritize and multitask

  • Qualifications:


    • Minimum five (5) years of experience in oncology

    • Familiarity with HIPPA and standard medical record communication.

    • Basic knowledge and skills in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills

    • Working knowledge of insurance coverage

    • Working knowledge of supportive community resources


    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred

    • OCN preferred

    • Current State of California RN license required

    • BLS certificate required
