Job Summary:

3M is seeking a Full Stack Developer to join the Corporate Research Systems Lab (CRSL), which collaborates and innovates with all of 3M's businesses and divisions. As a 3Mer, you will apply your expertise to bring “science and innovation to life” in diverse markets that include healthcare, energy, manufacturing, industrial safety, transportation, and consumer. CRSL’s collaborative, cross-functional teams are responsible for designing and developing end-to-end digital systems that include hardware, electronics, artificial intelligence, cloud, backend, and frontend application software. Underpinned in science, these digital systems forge innovative connections between technologies and emerging customer needs. Innovation is the heartbeat of 3M.

As a CRSL Full Stack Developer, you will use your exceptional technical expertise, fearless creativity, natural curiosity, and passion for learning to deliver new to the world systems. In this role, you will be able to leverage your experience with all levels of the software stack, including backend databases and APIs, frontend UI frameworks, cloud services, and IoT device integration. As part of an agile team, you will work side-by-side with scientists, engineers, and domain experts in broad disciplines, lead the team in disciplined software development, and learn new skills from your diverse team. In this role, you will be tasked with building state-of-the-art, scalable, enterprise grade systems that can ingest data from a wide variety of IoT devices, enable machine learning, artificial intelligence, and modeling services, and provide insights to users through cutting edge visualization technologies like AR/VR.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Analyze, design, develop, and debug software systems to deliver advanced prototypes

  • Write clean, readable, reusable code in a variety of languages including JavaScript, Java, Python, C++, and C# for a broad variety of applications

  • Leverage the latest cloud services from AWS and Azure

  • Embrace the ambiguity of research by constantly learning new technologies

  • Work with various source control technologies such as GitHub, Git, and Azure DevOps

  • Collaborate in an agile, cross-functional team to rapidly deliver software systems

  • Synthesize customer requirements, prioritize solutions, and demonstrate the grit needed to deliver exceptional value to the customer

  • Implement Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, testing frameworks, Software Configuration Management (SCM), monitoring, logging, infrastructure as code, and container solutions

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited university


  • High School Diploma/GED or higher and a minimum five (5) years of software development experience in a private, public, government or military environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum three (3) years of software development experience in a private, public, government or military environment

  • Ability to work with many languages and frameworks including Python, C++, C#, Java, Javascript, HTML, React, Angular, and others

  • Experience developing with AWS and Azure services such as EC2, Sagemaker, DynamoDB, Lambda, S3, Greengrass, Docker, Azure Virtual Machines, Databricks, CosmosDB, Azure Functions, Blob Storage, IoT Edge, Kubernetes, etc

  • Experience following disciplined development practices including code versioning (Git, Azure DevOps, etc), code reviews, and unit and integration testing

  • Experience working in a cross-functional software development environment that includes hardware and software integration

  • Experience ingesting, transforming, and transferring large, varied datasets

  • Experience with systems employing machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms such as computer vision, image processing, deep learning, time series analysis, reinforcement learning, and sequential learning

  • Ability to deal with the ambiguity of early-stage scouting and evaluation of new opportunities and the flexibility to change direction as additional information becomes available

  • Strong scientific and technical acumen, with demonstrated interest and ability to make connections between science/technology and real-world concerns

  • Self-motivated and self-directed with excellent communication skills

Location: Maplewood, MN

Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international

Relocation: May be authorized
