Ash Grove Cement is looking for a concrete petrographer/ geologist to performs physical, chemical and petrographic analysis on aggregates, concrete, and other materials.  The petrographer follows standard practice guidelines and procedures, maintains equipment and supplies, and prepares reports on findings for internal review before submission to management and customers.  Completion of routine assignments with minimal supervision, safely handling of chemicals, and hands-on experience in sample preparations are expected on the job. 




  • Receives, logs and labels incoming samples.

  • Prepares samples for analysis.

  • Assembles, calibrates and maintains various types of equipment and instruments used at the Technical Center.

  • Performs laboratory examinations on aggregate, concrete, clinker, and other inorganic materials through petrographic examination, x-ray diffraction, optical and electron microscopy, and wet chemistry analytical techniques. Performs research projects as assigned.

  • Maintains a record of all data and tests performed, including general observations or unusual conditions encountered.

  • Writes reports to management personnel, technical service, and customers, conveying the results and significance of investigations.

  • Develops analytical methods SOP and statistics as needed and time permits.

  • Improves proficiency in analytical techniques and follows current developments in the fields of cement, lime, concrete, and associated technology.

  • Embraces cross-training at the Technical Center on various instrument operations and analytical skill development.

  • Performs back-up analyses and assumes responsibilities of other analysts as needed.

  • Maintains active membership in the local chapter of the American Concrete Institute (KACI), including ACI certification for Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I.




  • Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated analytical skills problem solving skills

  • Ability to work within tight timeframes and meet strict deadlines

  • Knowledge of petrographic / mineralogy laboratory testing procedures and guidelines, including well defined analytical approaches and methods, as well as the interpretation of results

  • Ability to read and follow testing procedures described in the standard specifications by various agencies, such as ASTM, AASHTO, ACI, and DOT specs

  • Customer focused and demonstrated teamwork attitude

  • Proven aptitude for work hard and work smart

  • Adaptability to handle non-routine, challenging work at short notice, and deliver satisfying results dependably

  • Self-motivated, with fast learning potential, and committed to grow with the technical services team


  • Experience in a laboratory setting. (Preferred) 



  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering geology (mineralogy focus), concrete materials or a related field.
