Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Pharmaceutical Staff Scientist to join our pharmaceutical Ashland Specialty ingredients G.P business at our Wilmington, Delaware Site. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the pharmaceutical development function. This position will report to Senior Staff Scientist/Team Leader/Research Scientist.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Lead and execute new product development, customer technical service, and contract research projects to support pharmaceutical business growth especially in parenteral dosage forms and formulations for biologics

  • Design and execute studies to advance pharmaceutical formulations and processes using Ashland pharmaceutical excipient technologies.

  • Generate and maintain documentation required by projects and pharmaceutical operations including batch records, SOPs, protocols, etc. Evaluate data and documentation from project trials and testing, and prepare reports summarizing the R&D activities

  • Coordinate activities with project leaders, R&D teams, sales, regulatory, and other cross functional team members to ensure the delivery of quality results in a timely manner

  • Provide technical review of marketing literature and presentations

  • Support trainings to Ashland global sales and technical teams as well as customers

  • Present research findings at major technical conferences and journals

  • Provide technical support to North America and global accounts

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • Ph.D. degree in Industrial Pharmaceutics or Chemical Engineering from an accredited institution

  • 1-5 years of experience in pharmaceutical oral solid and/or parenteral dosage forms/process development and manufacturing.

  • M.S. degree with 5 + years’ experience is also acceptable.

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:


  • Thorough knowledge on oral solid and parenteral dosage forms.

  • Experience with biologic formulations and characterization, and working experience with PLGA is highly desirable

  • Extensive hands-on experience with formulation processes and formulation technologies

  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills

  • Ability to successfully manage multiple activities with agility to achieve company and departmental objectives.

  • Working knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE), Microsoft Office Suite, and statistical analysis.
