Summary

Plans, coordinates and supervises all quarry operations to meet plant production needs.  Uses independent judgement to analyze and solve problems and determine proper procedures.  Works under general supervision with specified standard practices and objectives.  Refers to supervisor only when in serious doubt as to the proper procedure for a specified action.  Exercised supervision over approximately 25 quarry employees, which includes a quarry supervisor and a truck garage supervisor.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities


  • Plans and coordinates quarry and mobile mechanic shop operations

  • Establishes, assigns and communicates job responsibilities

  • Supervises and evaluates job performance according to specified objectives

  • Conducts meetings as needed to discuss and coordinate quarry and mobile equipment operations

  • Performs troubleshooting to prevent problems with equipment or operations

  • Maintains specified records on employees and jobs completed

  • Prepares reports as requested by plant management regarding the daily operations of the quarry

  • Ensures compliance to safety standards and regulations by participating in safety meetings and work area inspections

  • Handles safety problems and employee relation problems as they arise

  • Strategically plans short- and long-term goals for quarry operations to meet the anticipated production levels

  • Maintains awareness of current industry trends and practices by reading trade journals and industry magazines

  • Assists with the preparation of annual budgets and specifications on purchased equipment. Coordinates purchased material with plant needs.

  • Maintains environmental records

  • Maintains the mining plan and ensures it is followed

Required Minimum Qualifications


  • Familiar with MSHA/OSHA regulations, safe work practices and hazard recognition

  • Familiar with basic air, water and waste regulations

  • Experience with in establishing a drilling and sampling program for production and long term mining a plus

  • Knowledge of departmental budgeting and forecasting

  • Knowledge of workplace rules and regulations enforcement

  • Ability to interpret geological and chemical data for development of a mining plan

  • Familiar with quarry processing equipment such as crushers, belt conveyors, dust collectors etc. along with an understanding of the mechanical and electrical principals to safely operate that equipment

  • Familiar with mobile fleet operating practices and maintenance on front end loaders, haul trucks, bulldozers, graders, water trucks, etc.

  • Familiar with preventative maintenance, proactive maintenance and reliability centered maintenance principles and practices

  • Familiar with surveying principles and practices

  • Work requires walking over rough, uneven and rocky surfaces, bending and climbing ladders

Education


  • Bachelors of Science degree preferred with emphasis in mining, civil engineering or geology.

  • Other bachelors degree with requisite experience in the mining, geology or aggregate production. 

Experience


  • Five or more years of working in mining/quarrying operations with managerial and front line supervisory experience.
