Job Description:

ERM is hiring for Wastewater Treatment Plan Operators for the Barstow and Commerce, CA.

This WWTP operator position will focus mainly on operating the WWTP daily operations.  Specific responsibilities are summarized below.


  • Travel to facilities in Barstow and Commerce, California

  • Test and maintain all safety related devices (Fire extinguishers, emergency eyewash & shower station(s), confined space equipment, arc flash equipment, etc.)

  • Operate & maintain WWTP (including oil water separators) in a manner that complies with all regulations, ordinances, permits, etc.

  • Perform monthly (minimum) jar testing and annual chemical usage reviews to help minimize costs.

  • Track chemical usage on a monthly basis.

  • Track Used Oil Shipments on a monthly basis.

  • Collect wastewater samples as needed & required at facilities:

    • Coordinate laboratory analysis with appropriate lab

    • Prepare Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) as required

  • Complete operations and maintenance activities, inspections and sampling as required by regulations/permit conditions for the facilities and equipment.

  • Meet with facility personnel on a weekly basis working on pollution prevention and waste minimization on the WWTP systems and sources/activities of wastewater generation.

  • Complete/Coordinate WWTP/OWS cleaning, as needed.

  • Operator to fill out weekly notifications summary.

  • After hours and holiday services, as needed.

  • Review, maintain and update any and all necessary plans, permits, procedures, work instructions, etc. as directed.

  • Lead, support and comply with all safety standards, all operational procedures/policies as stated in the client Environmental Health and Safety programs

  • Supervisory responsibility to provide technical direction to a team of junior and mid- level employees

  • Conduct field investigations and condition assessments to identify process needs and solutions and perform start-up inspections.

  • Supervise as needed the repair and maintenance of components including; pumps, tanks, clarifiers, separators, agitators, dosing pumps, sludge transfer, filters, flow meters, level sensors, sludge presses, centrifugal pumps

  • Maintain a working knowledge of all equipment associated with the receipt, storage, usage, treatment, removal of  wastewater

  • Follow and utilize the project checklist as required

  • Utilize the Client-specific systems for WWTP and OWS Inspections and Preventive & Corrective Maintenance & equipment documentation.

  • Participate in monthly WWTP Operator and other calls as appropriate.

  • Assist WW Manager’s with special projects as needed.

  • Operator to utilize and maintain location pages and other documents as instructed.

  • Operator to utilize/maintain SharePoint site location page contacts and Site Information folder

  • Coordination with Industrial Control System Sr. Manager and Engineering for support on industrial control systems.

  • Attend the annual WWTP Summit at the given location, date, and times.


  • High School diploma.

  • If required, must be able to obtain industrial wastewater operator’s license within 6 months of hire.

  • U.S. citizenship and ability to pass ERM background check and drug screen.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record; ability to drive to the both project locations. A company or rental/lease vehicle will be provided for project work.

  • Ability to wear PPE.

  • Ability to read/interpret Electrical, Electronic, Hydraulic, Pneumatic, and Instrumentation Drawings, Schematics, and Technical Manuals.

  • Knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Office suite.

  • Training, knowledge, or experience related to the work to be performed and knowledge of the appropriate mitigation measures for the associated hazards.

  • Formal training to identify and mitigate hazards associated with specific high-risk activities.

  • Familiar with managing contractor safety for operations.

  • Familiar with OSHA safety regulations and requirements.

  • OSHA 30-hour required.

  • Strong background in chemical or mechanical or electrical.

  • Railroad experience a plus.
