SUMMARY: The Staff Accountant must be an organized and highly motivated team player with strong initiative and communication skills, a strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”), and the ability with little or no supervision to make independent judgments while applying GAAP to standard business transactions, including complex lease arrangements. American Tower (1) is an SEC registrant required to comply with SEC rules and regulations, which creates complexity in the financial reporting area; (2) has elected to be taxed as a Real Estate Investment Trust (“REIT”) for income tax purposes in the United States, which requires that transactions be reported in the proper legal entity to ensure compliance with REIT tax requirements; and (3) has secured debt arrangements that require separate reporting for the entities subject to the securitization, all of which results in financial reporting risk. The Staff Accountant will assist with monthly financial close activities, including journal entry preparation, account analysis and balance sheet reconciliation. The Staff Accountant prepares reports through analysis of basic operating statistics and/or financial data.
Monthly financial close activities for unit with over $1 billion in annual revenue, including the following:
Originate in Oracle financial software journal entries that provide the basis for accurate financial statements that must be provided to the SEC.
Perform analysis of P&L accounts in team-based approach for U.S. operations
Perform balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring transactions are reported properly to support REIT and securitization reporting
Support internal control documentation, checklists and audits to comply with the Sarbanes Oxley Act.
Perform monthly operations reporting, including providing support for SEC reporting
Assist with various projects and accounting matters to drive value through financial analyses
Account for transactions, including complex lease arrangements, business acquisitions and other matters in accordance with GAAP
Identify process enhancements for senior management and then initiate same
Provide support for accounting for basic new business initiatives from GAAP prospective
Perform ad hoc financial and accounting analysis as requested by management
Provide data to respond to audit requests
Assess accounting procedures to comply with GAAP guidance
Other duties as may be assigned

Must be flexible as there may be workweeks that require more than 40 hours to ensure the positions expectations and responsibilities are met
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
0-2 years of experience in accounting or finance preferred
ENVIRONMENT: 100% performed in climate-controlled internal office environment working under normal office conditions. Approximately 0-5% travel will be required in support of the position’s responsibilities.
