Position Summary

Responsible for coordinating with customers and DRS team members to support the design, development, and production of Cooled Infrared Sensors and Systems.  The Quality Engineer’s primary responsibilities will be to lead customer engagements and presentation of Quality metrics and status of root cause and corrective actions.  The Quality Engineer will be responsible for understanding design and manufacturing documentation and performing reviews as part of a cross functional team to ensure quality objectives are met and drive continuous improvement.The position may require travel and support at suppliers across the United States.

Basic Qualifications and Required Skills


  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or related technical field or equivalent experience and a minimum of 5 years of experience.

  • Experience as a Prime Contractor to the USG.

  • Experience presenting technical information to Government customers.

  • Experienced with ISO Standards, 6 Sigma tools, Statistics.

  • Experience with military specifications, interface documents, and contracts.

  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, communication and writing skills.

  • Significant experience defining problems and driving to root cause and effective corrective action.

Desired Skills


  • Ability to lead an Engineering team.

  • Understanding of Reliability Engineering concepts and functions.

  • Mastery of failure analyses.

  • Understanding of various mechanical inspection techniques.

  • Familiar with requirements for a Quality Management System (ISO 9001, AS9100).

  • Experience with embedded military products and automated test equipment, along with on and off vehicle platform testing and verification activities.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Responsible for serving as Quality liason between the customers and the product team.

  • Participates in all aspects of program support.

  • Provides support in resolving customer and internal quality issues and driving root cause and corrective action on process and product quality issues.

  • Performs surveillance of supplier's conformance to DRS Technologies requirement.

  • Develops and generates statistical reports on inspection and test activities and results.

  • Ensures supplier contract flow-down requirements are implemented and verified.

  • Provides technical liaison support related to design and quality engineering matters.

  • Participates in product quality improvement teams, Material Review Boards and Failure Review Boards.  Evaluates and dispositions non-conforming material.

  • Provides technical support for Assembly/Test/Inspection personnel to include executing workmanship improvement plans, developing inspection methods and criteria, specifying appropriate sampling plans, interpreting and revising specifications, and processing non-conforming materials.

  • Analyzes and executes projects independently.

  • Considers financial impacts of quality process controls and inspections.

  • Supports, communicates, reinforces and defends the mission, values and culture of the organization.

  • Oversee/provide guidance to team members in performing root cause analysis and identifying solutions to complex problems.

  • Support appropriate supplier, business or Program meetings.

  • Prepares quality engineering reports and recommendations.

  • Monitor and mentor junior Quality Engineers.

  • Provides regular reporting of progress and status.

  • Completion of assigned task on time and meeting technical requirements.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions


  • Travel up to 25% per year
