Old National Bank is looking for a Commercial Banking Unit Underwriter in Evansville, IN who will underwrite, structure and decision small business loans up to $1 million in size utilizing assigned lending authority. The Commercial Banking Unit Underwriter will use an online application software and supporting templates to 1) accurately assess risk and assign the appropriate risk rating on each loan and 2) arrive at a recommended loan decision in an efficient manner. The Commercial Banking Unit Underwriter requires strong communication skills, the ability to collaborate with commercial relationship managers to determine clients' financing needs as well as an appropriate loan structure in accordance with bank guidelines. In addition, sound critical thinking skills and the confidence to make and support loan decisions is required.


  • Evaluate, analyze, and decision small business loan applications

  • Recommend accurate risk assessments in a timely manner

  • Collaborate with Commercial Relationship Managers, Commercial Banking Unit Agents and Documentation Specialists as an application progresses through internal commercial lending processes

  • Assist in managing workflow for the Commercial Banking Unit Underwriter team, determining eligibility and completeness of loan applications and maintain a group email box

  • Complete special projects at the direction of the Director of Small Business Underwriting and Administration

  • Assist in training new Commercial Relationship Managers and new Commercial Banking Unit Underwriters

  • Maintain and grow analytical skills and industry knowledge through internal and external training and reading business related periodicals


  • Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting or equivalent work-related experience is required

  • 5-7 years of experience as a Commercial Underwriter/Analyst is preferred. 2-5 years of experience will be considered

  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial statements and understand basic accounting principles

  • Knowledge of lending to and risks associated with all types of industries is important

  • Knowledge of loan structuring, borrowing causes and lending regulations to process loan applications efficiently and effectively is a must

  • Must possess (or willing to possess in short order) a deep understanding of ONB's credit culture, loan policies and loan guidelines and procedures to ensure standards are met

  • Must be able to actively listen, quickly identify issues and opportunities, problem solve, resolve issues and work collaboratively with Commercial Relationship Managers, Commercial Banking Unit Agents and Documentation Specialists

  • Must be able to make independent, informed and sound decisions and communicate effectively to a variety of associates throughout the organization

  • Demonstrated attention to detail, high sense of urgency, ability to work on multiple loan applications at one time and embrace a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
