Position Overview

The Construction Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of either highway, grade, utility or site development crews. This position will primarily perform supervisory duties, but on occasions may assist with the general laborer and equipment operation tasks as needed. Primarily work 8-10 hours per day, 5-6 days per week. Will also be required to work up to 14 hours per day, and 7 days a week as needed during the peak construction season. This position may include traveling for extended periods of time to perform job duties at various job site locations, but primarily based in Helena, Montana.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Ensures the safety of crew members and the public on all projects.

  • Coordinates daily work activities, job site organization, reading of plans and specifications, etc.

  • Organizes job site goals, timelines and budgets.

  • Supervise and coordinate employees, equipment, subcontractors and suppliers.

  • Orders required supplies and materials along with obtaining supplies, parts and materials as needed.

  • Understanding and capable of teaching civil construction activities.

  • Communicate tactfully and effectively with owners, inspectors and engineers.

  • Adjust crews and equipment to meet project schedules and budgets.

  • Maintaining time and materials records necessary to complete daily job costing.

  • Maintaining company policy.

  • Recommending measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, product quality and crew performance.

  • Complete daily time cards for crew

  • Perform other duties as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Will directly supervise 5 to 20 construction employees


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.


  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.

  • 5 or more years of related civil construction experience, including heavy equipment operating and general laboring.

  • Experience as a Superintendent or management role preferred, including, but not limited to site development, underground utilities and highway.

Work Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • Ability to perform basic computer operations.

  • Display professional and respectful attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health, & Safety Manual. 

  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.

  • Must be willing to be available during non-business hours to handle last minute scheduling changes etc. (i.e. nights and weekends).

  • Regular, on time attendance is an essential function of this position.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Comprehensive understanding of DOT regulations and project specifications relating to construction activities.

  • Knowledge of safe equipment operation and efficiency.

  • Proven capability to direct employees effectively.

  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively with written and/or verbal instructions.

Personal Protective Equipment

Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and construction areas as outlined by the Company policy. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position:  Hard hat, safety glasses, reinforced toed shoes, hand protection, hearing protection, safety vest/high visibility clothing for any work in the field.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee is required to sit, walk, stand, climb, crawl, bend, kneel, reach above shoulders, and lift and/or move from 10 to 100 pounds for periods of time.  The employee must be able to drive a company vehicle to various work sites throughout the state.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust to focus both during daytime hours and nighttime hours.
