Responsible for learning all aspects of CDL Class A driving for the delivery of products to customers. To include loading and unloading the truck in a safe and timely manner according to UNFI procedures and practices. The Driver Trainee will learn how to minimize delays and report problems. In addition the Driver Trainee will learn to pick up supplies and back-hauls from vendors. This role is a developmental role to become a licensed CDL A Driver for UNFI.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:
Learn and demonstrate pre and post trip inspections of vehicle utilizing knowledge of safe and effective loading and handling procedures. Review paperwork for completeness and accuracy. Check orders for correct number of boxes, correct addresses, and support documentation.
Learn and demonstrate competency in completion of time cards, entering trip data into on-board computer and completing paper logs if necessary. Learn and comply with all FMCSA regulations pertaining to Class A CDL Drivers
Learn to deliver and unload products utilizing equipment including tractor trailer, ramps, lift gates, pallet jacks, load bars and other devices which assist delivery. Verify piece count, leave the appropriate paperwork and secure the required signatures and store stamps (when applicable) on delivery documents.
Learn to operate vehicle safely within UNFI guidelines minimizing accidents, traffic violations and complaints from the public.
Learn and demonstrate proficiency in the reporting of incidents immediately to the Transportation Manager/Department.
Learn and demonstrate proficiency in keeping UNFI owned and leased vehicles well maintained, safe, and secure. Report any defects promptly using DCVR form.
Learn and demonstrate proficiency in pick-up of supplies and back hauls from vendors. Complete related paperwork.
Learn and demonstrate proficiency in addressing and resolving customer problems as appropriate.
Attend mandatory drivers meetings, training or administrative sessions as required.
Maintains the Company’s professional reputation to customers, the public and company employees. Projects professional image by dressing in company provided clothing
Assumes other related duties as required or assigned.
High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
Valid medical card as prescribed by the Federal Motor Carrier Administration
Valid state specific Commercial Drivers License, Class A for external applicants. Internal applicants (current UNFI associates) need to be able and willing to earn a Commercial Drivers License, Class A.
Ability to pass a written exam and road test.
Basic knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) laws and mandates.
Understanding of UNFI's safety standards.
Must be 21 years of age.
System implementation experience is preferred.
Good written and verbal communication skills
