Position description

The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, Certified Ophthalmic Technician, Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technician or Ophthalmic Medical Assistant assists providers with patient care, testing and treatment by assessing patient history and needs, and administering prescribed tests.

Performs a variety of technical tests.
Documents patient record and educates patient on eye health.


High School diploma or equivalent required.
Two years work experience in a healthcare setting required.

If a Medical Assistant, must also be a graduate of a medical assistant program.

Additional qualifications

Previous clinical work experience in Ophthalmology and/or Optometry preferred.

Computer experience and skills helpful.
Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance.

Ability to competently use equipment in Ophthalmology Clinic.
Must be willing to travel to and work at various sites

License or certification

Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Ophthalmic Medical Technician (COMT), or,

If a Medical Assistant, Medical Assistant certification or registration. In the event of no certification or registration and ineligibility to become certified or registered, an ABR-OE or equivalent is required. Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant will be required within 2 years of hire.

Current BLS certification from one of the following:
1. American Heart Association
2. American Red Cross
