Job Summary:

The person hired for the position of Senior Counsel, Litigation and Preventive Law will be an experienced litigator joining a fast-paced team of eight other lawyers and a team of legal professionals who jointly manage litigation and preventive law across 3M.

This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military environments to a 3M career.

Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Strategically managing intellectual property (patent, trademark, and trade secret) and commercial litigation, including supervising outside counsel and consultants and carefully managing budgets.

  • Strategically managing other types of litigation or government investigations as lead internal counsel as needed.

  • Advising 3M business and Legal Affairs colleagues regarding litigation and company risk.

  • Partnering with 3M business and specialist lawyers on preventative law matters to mitigate risk.

  • Contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Litigation and Preventive Law team.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Possess a Juris Doctor degree (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited law school

  • Active member of a state bar in good standing

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of civil litigation practice, including appellate and trial court experience in state and federal courts

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing intellectual property and commercial litigation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Member of patent bar

  • Experience serving as in-house counsel

  • Experience serving as national or coordinating counsel

  • Experience managing or coordinating large teams

  • Long-term, strategic, and practical thinker

  • Self-starter with the ability to triage and manage time-sensitive matters simultaneously and effectively

  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to communicate at all levels of the organization, including business leaders, department leaders, and director-level management

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate transparently, efficiently, and effectively at all levels within a team environment

  • Honesty and unwavering integrity

  • Sense of humor, curiosity, and a drive for continuous improvement

Location:  Maplewood, MN

Travel:  May include up to 30% domestic/international

Relocation:  Is authorized
