Job Description

The Sr Technical Sourcing Manager will be based in Austin, TX.  Responsible for creating and driving a global sourcing strategy for emerging technologies in support of Flex’s Sketch to Scale new product development and help accelerate time-to-market. Responsible for providing technical support, technical capability to the Supply Chain organization to ensure continuity of supply, supplier development, supplier readiness and improvement activities to improve the cost, delivery, response, service & quality requirements for customers. This role will be a crucial technical conduit between external customers, business segment CTOs, COEs, Design, and the supply base, for one of several core technologies that are building blocks for new products and solutions: Embedded Systems (Processors, FPGA, SoC), Memory & Storage, Analog, Discrete & Logic, RF & Wireless Connectivity, Sensors & Displays, Interconnects (Connectors, Cables/Wires), Mechanicals (Fabricated Metals & Plastics)

Here is a glimpse of what you’ll do:

Business Strategy and Direction:


  • Promote revenue generation by researching and aligning comprehensive ecosystem solutions for core technologies with specific business segment needs, especially in the early phases of the product development lifecycle from feasibility study to proof of concept

  • Apply a thorough market analysis to strategic supplier selection and development of predictable pricing plans and total cost of ownership modeling

  • Develop executive level relationships with the supply base and customers, ensuring that Flex’s wants, needs and requirements are clearly communicated and build compelling Supply Chain Solutions for Strategic Clients

  • Initiate/monitor involvement between the GCM team and Flex design for core technologies

  • Develop effective relationships with SSCM/ GAM to ensure that GCM is fully involved with new business opportunities. Establish credibility with customers through the demonstration of technical competence

Technical Management:


  • Identify new technology trends and drive the innovation of new disruptive concepts that will provide a significant competitive advantage and business benefit for Flex

  • Partner collaboratively with engineering – Flex COEs, business segment CTOs and Design teams, to understand customer technical requirements and help architect and develop the best design solutions


  • Lead comprehensive technology assessment and competitive analysis of various supplier solutions to ensure optimal component sourcing

  • Develop supplier capabilities and drive technology roadmap visibility across Flex business segments and manufacturing sites

  • Develop supplier technical negotiation strategies to deliver against business objectives

  • Utilize GCM resources to advise designers of lower-cost material or assembly approaches, and sit it in on design reviews as required

  • Drive the GCM team to carry out the necessary supplier development initiatives to fill process gaps and unique customer process challenges 

NPI/Development Management:


  • Lead and direct sourcing teams in identifying, communicating and implementing sourcing strategies and supply chain management best practice.

  • Plan and implement activities related to the timely and cost-effective procurement inventory control, planning and quality control of production materials

  • Work with strategic Supply Management to develop and deploy a cohesive supply chain strategy for segment specific products and customers including

  • Traditional EMS vs ODM/CDM supply Chain

  • Obsolescence and PLC management

  • Develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures, material control systems and metrics to reduce costs, streamline procedures and implement solutions.

  • Work with the Global Commodity management and strategic supply chain management teams on sourcing strategies including supplier selection, risk analysis and capacity management

  • Utilize GPO resources to advice designers of lower-cost material or assembly approaches: and sit it in on design reviews as required Drive the GPO team to carry out the necessary supplier development initiatives to fill process gaps and unique customer process challenges

  • Help develop a quick RFO process, based on Segment business knowledge and direct suppliers with accurate target pricing

Cost Management:


  • Source components and/or services that will provide competitive advantage in both technology and cost for Flex

  • Maintain a cost-effective infrastructure that supports the size and scale of the Segment  Business

  • Develop pricing strategies for production, design, and benchmark quoting

  • Ensure a process for including the Segment business critical parts into the quarterly negotiation cycle

  • Utilize previous investments & activities for future requirements

  • Identify creative ways to reduce cost by streamlining processes, systems and value engineering

  • Define, develop and make effective use of cost analysis tools

  • Help develop a quick RFQ process, based on Segment business knowledge and direct suppliers with accurate target pricing

  • Develop understanding of price points for common types / commodities within the segment

  • Provide mechanical inventory reduction management recommendations

  • Establish long term pricing contracts that support the needs of the customer and segment

Here is some of what you’ll need (required);


  • 10+ years of experience in supplier management, product planning, technical marketing, strategic sourcing, or product development in a manufacturing organization, including supervision and management in Embedded Systems (Processors, FPGA, SoC), Memory & Storage, Analog, Discrete & Logic, RF & Wireless Connectivity, Sensors & Displays, Interconnects (Connectors, Cables/Wires) or Mechanicals (Fabricated Metals & Plastics)

  • Strong business and technical product vision and a track record of leading teams delivering products on time with leading edge technology

  • Ability to influence/lead development teams and external suppliers to deliver results

  • Demonstrated results of improving supply chain and supplier performance throughout product lifecycle

  • Excellent written and verbal communication with strong program management skills

  • Preferred: MS in Electrical engineering or other related technical field. MBA is a plus.
