Critical Care Transport Nurse - St. Vincent PRN at Mercy Health in Toledo, Ohio

Responsible for providing emergency nursing care in a prompt and efficient manner to all patients transported via Mercy St. Vincent's Life Flight. Responsible for assessing, planning, organizing, documenting, and evaluating patient care in conjunction with the flight physician or critical care transport paramedic. The Critical Care Transport Nurse acts as a professional representative of Mercy St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and St. Rita's Medical Center to the community, as an educator to professional groups, to emergency medical services and promotes Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and St. Rita's Medical Center as regional referral centers. Assists in the provision of care to patients of all age groups (neonate, pediatric, adult and geriatric).

Essential Functions:

  • Provides professional nursing care to the urgent/emergent needs of the patient prior to air or ground transfer and in both the airborne and ground environment. Works with the Life Flight physician or critical care transport paramedic to assess patients condition, to interpret patient related data, to establish immediate priorities and plan of care.

  • Evaluates the patient care delivered in conjunction with the flight physician or critical care transport paramedic.

  • Acts as a professional representative of Mercy St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center and St. Rita's Medical Center to the community.

  • Cooperates with all ancillary and flight support services.

  • Documents necessary and appropriate patient assessment and care.

  • Facilitates the needs of Life Flight patients and their families during hospitalization at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and St. Rita's Medical Center; communicates with other hospital departments as necessary to facilitate those needs.

  • Communicates with EMS and hospital requestors as needed in order to care appropriately for transport patients. 

  • Acts as educator to professional groups and the EMS in our service area and promotes Mercy St. Vincent and St. Rita's Medical Center as the regional referral centers. 

  • Participates in department standing and ad hoc committees

  • Attends internal and external educational meetings, keeps current in knowledge skills and clinical competencies through professional journals, professional organizations etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Required Minimum Education:

  • 2 year Associates Degree in Nursing. 4 year Bachelors Degree preferred.

Required Licensures:

  • Must posses a current license as a Registered Nurse from the State of Ohio

  • CAMTS approved advanced certification (CCRN, CSC, ACNPC, CEN, CPEN, CFRN, or CTRN) required or obtained within one year of hire.

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification required

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required

  • Basic Trauma Life Support Certification required within 6 months of hire

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 6 months of hire. 

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required within 6 months of hire. 

Preferred Licensures: 

  • Michigan Registered Nurse license    

  • BCLS Instructor certification preferred

  • ACLS Instructor certification preferred

  • EMT Certification preferred

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Years and Type of Experience: 

  • 3 years of professional nursing experience in critical care with at least 1 year  of emergency care experience

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 

  • Work requires 6 months orientation to acquire necessary familiarity with department and unit policies and procedures.

  • Must possess analytical abilities, sound nursing knowledge, problem solving skills for the effective formulation of a plan of care, implementation of care, and appropriate documentation of pertinent information  regarding patient-condition.

  • Must possess sufficient interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and hospital personnel. Must have demonstrated leadership skills to participate in professional and community education programs; and to effectively maintain good public relations for the institution.
