Summary of Job Duties
(Note: This summary will be used for keyword search) As a Staff Research Associate, develops and executes major and/or multi-disciplinary research projects, and performs state of the art complex research projects in collaboration with academic supervisors. Contributes significant original and innovative ideas of major methodological significance to the research. Exercises independent judgement, discretion, initiative and resourcefulness in making decisions related to the research, and assists with the preparation of articles for publication in scientific journals and/or for presentation at conferences/symposiums. Specifically, this research involves working as part of a team of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students to investigate the underlying causes of eye disease and devise novel strategies for treatment. Will carry out experiments using modern methods of cell biology, biochemistry, and stem cell biology using human pluripotent stem cells, including iPS cells, ES cells and other cell types. Work may also include experimentation in model organisms. Consults with the academic supervisor and other academics or professional researchers on the nature and overall objectives of the research project.
Works with researchers on a pedagogical article describing the development of interactive learning exercises in the teaching of stem cell research to undergraduates, and will continue to assist in the tabulation of data gleaned from student surveys. This work is being prepared for submission to a journal specializing in science education.
As the Clegg Laboratory Manager, supervises and manages a team of 9 individuals, including MA students, technicians and undergraduate researchers in the lab. These duties include identifying and executing question driven research projects, training in laboratory techniques, analysis of results, reporting results, ordering of supplies, applying for grants, and writing scientific papers and documents. The SRA 4 will meet with these supervisees on a daily basis to set goals and agendas, and set expectations for progress in research.
Oversees lab budget, purchasing, grant submission and progress reports, manuscript submission and communications, laboratory compliance (IACUC, ESCRO, BUA), materials transfer agreements, travel arrangements and reimbursements; Helps arrange laboratory meetings, conferences and visitations by other researchers; serves on and manages all relocation efforts on the Clegg Relocation Committee. Head efforts to revamp and maintain the Clegg Lab web site.
Responsible for laboratory organization, including filing of notes, research records, receipts, laboratory notebooks, compliance documents, conference records, patents, MTAs, and CDAs. Organizes laboratory equipment, furniture, and reagents. Assists in ordering, organizing shipments and receiving and stocking of reagents.
As the Executive Manager of the Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering, organizes Center research collaborations, both internal to
UCSB as well as between UCSB scientists and external researchers; serves on the Stem Cell Center Seminar Committee, helps organize visits by outside lecturers; manages center space, aides in administration of the Laboratory for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering, the Center's California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM)-funded core facility, including logging and analysis of facility usage to establish recharge policies; provides managerial support for the Garland Initiative for Vision, which includes management of research collaborations, meetings, budget, travel activities, reimbursements, and website; maintains the Center website; schedules and organizes outreach events to educate the public about stem cell research at UCSB.
Master's degree in biology or related field or equivalent experience. Minimum 5 years of research experience.
Advanced degree. 10 or more years of research experience preferred.
