POSITION INFORMATION

The Lab Assistant will be responsible for overseeing basic laboratory activities, including maintaining protist and bacterial stock cultures, protist medium preparation, protist sample collection and enumeration, bacteria staining, and participating in microscopy work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

Ability to work in a large team of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty scientists.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of basic bacteria and protist natural history and ecology.

Experience with the following laboratory equipment/techniques: standard and fluorescence microscopes; FLOWCAM or other fluid imaging equipment; video editing.

College-level upper-division coursework in ecology.

Basic knowledge of Excel and/or R or other data management and analysis software.
