Under the direction of the Campus Architect/Assistant Vice Chancellor of Planning, Design & Construction, the Senior Planner is responsible for the development of analyses related to the campus' capital improvement program; preparation of detailed program documents and funding justifications; coordination of working groups, management of outside consultant activities; and preparation of planning reports, approvals and other documents. This may involve selecting professional design staff, coordinating the activities of clients, design professionals (planners, architects, engineers) and others associated with the project, monitoring project progress, cost and quality, resolving problems that arise in the project; working with state agency officials to ensure compliance, and communication with project stakeholders regarding program, budget, and schedule. The Senior Planner participates in advanced, highly-complex planning activities, and also collaborates in the formulation of capital project budgets and schedules, and management of capital projects during programming and design. The Senior Planner is also expected to make presentations, facilitate meetings, and moderates discussions as part of the planning and project implementation process. Formulates recommendations for the best use of existing facilities and land resources; provide planning, financial, and technical consultation as part of the project development.


Education Requirements


Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Master's degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, City Planning or other planning or environmental related field.



Architectural License.



LEED Certification.



5 years of capital planning and/or project management experience with an institution of higher education or similar environments that includes experience with planning for research laboratories, instructional space, student housing, and infrastructure projects.

6 - 10 years of related experience.



Hired candidate must successfully pass a background check through the DOJ and FBI prior to appointment start date.

Ability to operate University vehicles for business and operational needs.

Ability to possess or obtain a Valid CA Driver License in accordance with California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Occasional travel for business related meetings, professional development, conferences and/or events.


Advanced knowledge/skills in city planning, architecture, or other planning-related fields.
Advanced analytical and project management skills.
Advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including advanced political acumen.
Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its architectural history, short and long range development plans, infrastructure and current, on-going and future design and construction plans.
Demonstrated experience in effectively aligning resources with goals in an environment of competitive demands for resources. Ability to identify key issues in complex situations. Evaluate options and provide recommendations for next steps. Demonstrated orientation towards information-seeking, including soliciting input of others. Demonstrated strong analytical and reasoning skills including data gathering, interpretation, analysis, and reporting.
Ability to develop and implement direct and indirect strategies to influence desired outcomes. Ability to effectively articulate and advance organizational goals. Understand formal and informal organizational structures and constraints.
Demonstrated experience in translating program activities into physical space requirements.
Experience with analyzing information and transforming data into an effective visual communication of ideas.
Sound judgment and sensitivity to issues of policy and process.
Ability to work independently, to be innovative, and to work effectively as a member of a team.
Ability to coordinate and/or manage multiple high-priority assignments concurrently within established time-frames.
Ability to formulate and propose process improvements and procedures that enhance operations.
Ability to use, and experience with, workplace tools, including spreadsheets, word-processing and presentation software.


Demonstrated experience and ability in the development of justifications for capital projects, and the application of physical space standards and guidelines.

Knowledge of and/or experience with CAD/GIS software for use in planning studies and analyses.

Demonstrated knowledge of architectural, planning, and construction terminology and methods.

Knowledge of sustainable planning principles and environmental stewardship.
