Job summary
The Assistant Research Scientist creates various analytical tools to support research programs within the Conservation Research department. This may include, conducting but not be limited to, developing fisheries and ecosystem research, preparing and publishing scientific analyses, and supporting field programs in biotelemetry. This is a 2 Year Assignment.
Core Responsibilities
Responsible for conducting research in elasmobranchs, historical ecology, climate change, fisheries, protected species, spatial ecology, and ecosystem science projects
Responsible for obtaining, processing, organizing, and analyzing empirical data
Responsible for developing mechanistic and stochastic models using observational and environmental data, and generating data visualizations from these models
Responsible for preparing journal manuscripts and presenting conference presentations
Assists with providing technical support for the TRCC, including specimen preparation, data processing, data analyses, and database support
Assists with experimental research in respirometry and physiology at the TRCC
Assists with the development of innovative ecological indices, metrics, and indicators to address CR strategic objectives and activities
Assists with research on life history, assessment, climatic forcing, and population dynamics
Work closely with the Director of Science, principal investigators, staff, and students in CR
As needed, develops specific tools to support existing CR and Conservation & Science staff projects
As needed, assists with oversight of undergraduate research assistants and volunteers
Absolutely Required Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education
Advanced degree (M.Sc., Ph.D.) in the marine science, fisheries, statistics, ecology, computer science, mathematics, or advanced knowledge in these disciplines akin to such a degree
Geospatial ecology; expertise in processing and interpretation of environmental and biotelemetry data
Data science; expertise in applying empirical data to models to address applied environmental problems
Programming; expertise in R, Python, Matlab, C++, ADMB, ARCGIS, Excel, or other analytical software
Data visualization and information graphics; familiarity with leveraging large datasets into compelling figures and graphics for scientific and lay audiences
Boating skills and ability to work at sea
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in diverse working groups
Excellent writing and presenting skills
Ability to work within and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium's Core Values
Ability to obtain valid California driver's license and maintain clearance in the DMV Pull ProgramReference #
