Job summary:
This position creates tools, processes, and platforms to support data acquisition and research programs within the Conservation Research (CR) department.
Core Responsibilities
Develop, maintain and support analytical processes and platforms that are archived, annotated, and open-access
Vet, support and project manage departmental collaborations relating to data science
Obtain, process, organize, and analyze empirical environmental and biological data
Conduct research to support historical ecology, climate change, fisheries, protected species, spatial ecology, and ecosystem science research programs
Develop mechanistic and stochastic models using observational and environmental data
Write journal manuscripts and conference presentations from analyses and figures created
Assist with developing ecological indices, metrics, and ecosystem indicators to address strategic research questions
Assist with research conducted in the Ocean Memory Laboratory on long-term environmental records to generate baselines of ocean ecosystem health
As needed, aid with field research to support biotelemetry, life history, or building other novel data streams, which may be both ship-based and international
Work closely with Chief Scientist, principal investigators, scientific staff, students, and interns
As needed, develop specific tools to support existing CR and Conservation & Science staff projects, and advise other departments with their data-driven decision making needs
Absolutely Required Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education
Advanced degree (M.Sc., Ph.D.) in the environmental sciences, fisheries, statistics, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or advanced knowledge akin to such a degree
Version control; expertise in open access protocols: git, github, bitbucket, figshare, and OSF
Data science; expertise in applying empirical data to models to address applied problems
Data visualization; familiarity with leveraging large datasets into compelling graphical outputs
Programming; expertise in R, Matlab, Python, ArcGIS, Excel, and other analytical software
Excellent project communication and interpersonal skills in diverse working groups
Ability to work within and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium's Core Values
Desired Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education
Excellent public communication, speaking and manuscript writing skills
Ability to train and mentor junior staff and interns who lack quantitative and programming skills
Ability to lead project teams composed of diverse staff with varying levels of expertise
Familiarity and comfort operating analytical machinery in a QAQC specimen preparation laboratory.Reference #
