IDC's Enabling Technologies research team seeks a Research Director to cover the worldwide hard disk drive market (HDD), including key hard disk drive components.

Storage continues to be a key element of IT infrastructure, and hard disk drives play a critical role in providing random access storage capacity needed in enterprise datacenters and for other applications including video surveillance.


The position will be responsible for gathering and analyzing qualitative and quantitative information to create research studies and market data that provide strategic insights and advice to our clients. The Research Director's responsibilities include:
  • Market sizing
  • Forecasting
  • Market share reporting
  • Vendor analysis
  • Tracking technology trends
  • Providing technology insights
  • Pricing analysis, supply/demand analysis, and price elasticity of demand analysis
  • Collaboratively working with IDC analysts on custom projects

Other responsibilities include working with IDC analysts around the world to shape our research in storage, including solid state storage, maintain publication deadlines, and to performing custom consulting. The analyst will be responsible for responding to inquiries and developing relationships with HDD industry participants, including top executives and marketing and technology managers within the HDD industry, with OEM customers, and service provider accounts along with buy-side and sell-side financial analysts and the press.


  • Strong HDD industry knowledge, including key HDD component suppliers and familiarity with HDD consumption by OEMs, hyperscale/cloud service providers, and HDD usage in non-IT applications and systems.
  • Knowledge of HDD customer requirements that drive HDD supplier product and technology roadmaps.
  • Strong understanding of HDD technologies that make possible HDD areal density growth, and the enabling HDD technologies underpinning HDD areal density growth.
  • Knowledge of HDD supply chain dynamics, including manufacturing and new product introduction lead times is a plus
  • Knowledge of storage topologies VME,SSDS, HDD
  • Previous experience with NDME
  • Experience with market modeling and market sizing, with an ability to forecast and publish timely changes to market conditions preferred.
  • Advanced skills in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (including pivot tables).
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills for client inquiry and internal collaboration
  • Ability to write documents that are actionable and relevant for the target audience
  • Demonstrated presentation skills suitable for client events, conferences and small meetings.
  • Exhibits industry presence and Thought Leadership
  • Ability to travel (30-40%) for client meetings, industry events, and customer projects.
  • A Bachelor's degree is required. A minimum of seven years of pertinent industry experience is desired.
