Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking an experienced research associate for an immediate opening in the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory. This scientist will carry out routine sample preparation and proteomics analysis as well as work with customers to customize protocols and analytical methods for their projects.
The scientist will also be responsible for operation, maintenance and trouble- shooting of the mass spectrometry and HPLC instruments in the core. He or she will broadly apply mass spectrometry approaches in basic research, including cancer, neuroscience, and plant biology fields. The Mass Spectrometry core is equipped with three state-of-the-art mass spectrometers, including an Orbitrap Lumos, a Q Exactive HF and a Vantage Triple Quadrupole.
This individual will join a vibrant group of innovative scientists in a world-renowned research community. This group has broad expertise in various mass spectrometry applications, including protein identification, quantitative proteomics, metabolomics, phospholipid analysis, and PTM identification. The group is led by Dr. Darryl Pappin, a recognized leader in protein chemistry and proteomics, with a strong track record for technology and software development. Pappin was instrumental in the development of the MASCOT software and invention of the isobaric iTRAQ chemistry. In the last few years the Mass Spectrometry group has contributed to a wide variety of discoveries in cancer biology, including the identification of a potential cancer therapeutic from wheat germ extract, identification of a novel persulfide post-translational modification of protein tyrosine phosphatases and elucidation of a mechanism for the role of the CA19-9 carbohydrate in pancreatic cancer.

Position RequirementsEducation: Candidates should have a MS or PhD in a scientific discipline, preferably in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related field.
Experience: Applicants should have at least three years' experience in the operation of mass spectrometers in the fields of either proteomics or protein chemistry. Prior experience in the areas of general protein sample preparation and analysis (e.g. HPLC , SDS - PAGE , enzymatic assays, Westerns, colorimetric assays, precipitations, etc.), cell culture and general laboratory techniques is required. Familiarity and skills with Mass Spec search engines and data analysis for proteins is also essential.
Skills: They should be able to work effectively in a team while also independently planning and executing projects. The scientist will be expected to produce monthly and final reports to communicate progress on these projects. Excellent project management and communication skills are also necessary.
