Job Description:

ARA is looking for a Junior Chemist to work in our ESD Group supporting the chemistry lab. The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with knowledge of chromatographic, spectroscopic, and/or thermal techniques. The candidate will have the ability to analyze the data sets created by these techniques. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) Security Clearance and a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Suitability Clearance.

Our work focuses on the activities of explosive characterization and synthesis, use of bulk explosives to acquire data on detection equipment, and the handling and dissemination of data acquired in all of these activities.

Job Duties

  • Use spectroscopy, chromatography, and thermal techniques to analyze inorganic and organic compounds to determine physical or chemical properties, structures, relationships, compositions or reactions.

  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments to guarantee all technology is in working order, and to recognize and troubleshoot any problems or issues that arise with laboratory equipment.

  • Prepare compounds, test solutions and reagents to perform the appropriate test.

  • Conduct monthly quality control tests to ensure that no equipment or compounds are contaminated by outside variables or environmental factors that can be controlled.

  • Analyze and compile data from research tests to diagnose malfunctions or determine equipment or process operating efficiency.

  • Order chemicals and other laboratory supplies using the protocols which the Air Force has designated for us to use weekly and keep a close watch on expiration dates to ensure quality control in the lab

  • Learn the protocols which the Air Force wants us to use for the collection and disposal of hazardous waste

  • Interpret data in proper context

  • Communicate results and conclusions to other team members

 Job Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related field

  • Undergraduate-level classes in mathematics, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry or physics

  • An ability to work effectively independently or in a team environment

  • Ability to climb stairs, lift up to 30 pounds, and work safely and confidently in and around hazardous materials

  • Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to the facility



  • Bachelors or better in Chemistry or related field
