As a Plasma Process Design Engineer at Hypertherm, you will design and develop plasma cutting consumables and processes for our Heavy Industrial plasma cutting systems working with a multi-disciplinary engineering team of electrical, mechanical, and software engineers. In this Design Engineering role, you will evaluate the plasma arc cutting process and develop new and improved consumable geometries, and gas flows for cutting metal. This will involve applying your knowledge of fluid/gas dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer to the design and testing process.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with 2+ years of hands-on design engineering experience or equivalent. Product development experience preferred.
  • Deep comprehension and hands-on application of fluid/gas dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer
  • A passion for discovering creative and cost-effective mechanical designs for fabricated (machined, formed, molded) parts and assemblies
  • Ability to design, conduct, and analyze hands-on scientific experiments using prototyping, design of experiments (DOE)
  • Basic engineering instrumentation knowledge such as flow measurements, thermal measurements, oscilloscopes, data acquisition system
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate at all levels, engineers, managers, and technicians
  • Highly organized, self-motivated with the ability to work within a team environment


Additional qualifications that will make you stand out:
  • Knowledge of motion control and mechanical motion dynamics
  • Experience in plasma physics and material science
  • Experience in any of the following: RFID, laser process engineering, design for injection molded components, welding knowledge, robotics
  • Demonstrated project experience in DFM/A and ASME Y14.5 GD&T dimensioning practices, tolerance analysis
  • Experience in conducting a technical or product development; and an understanding of industrial product design and commercialization
  • Value Engineering/cost reduction in product design
  • An advanced degree in mechanical engineering or applied physics
