Our team of interdisciplinary code professionals work collaboratively to assure designs comply with all requirements of the international codes. Our history with local and regional jurisdictions and tribal governments includes plan review, field inspection, and interim building official.

Stantec's Tucson office is looking for a Commercial Plans Examiner who is responsible for approving moderate to complex commercial projects such as new construction and remodels of buildings of all occupancy types based on applicable codes, ordinances, and administrative directives which are enforced by the jurisdictions that Stantec Consulting Services provides services.

Your Key Responsibilities

Reading, interpreting, and approving plans and specifications; working directly with applicants, developers, contractors, and owner to resolve issues to gain code compliance in all international codes; researching and understanding construction methods, product applications, and code requirements; evaluating compliance based upon the specific conditions of each construction project, including the scope of work to be performed, nature of work, age of existing building, codes applicable during the original construction, and present code requirements; and maintaining paperwork and files in the office.

  • Reviewing plans, structural and energy calculations, product specifications, and other project submittals for design conformance and code compliance.
  • Communicating design and code nonconformance issues and approvals via phone, email, and written correspondence.
  • Organizing and maintaining project records, calculating project and client fees, denoting approved and denied project submittals, and learning and using client-based software applications.
  • Researches and enters technical data as required for sites, permits, or plans information into Word documents, various client software programs, and Microsoft Office files.
  • Writing corrections and problem-solving with design teams, contractors, developers, owners, and clients.
  • Creating and maintaining internal and external plan review records.
  • Advises applicants when deficiencies are discovered regarding client processes, review times, expedited reviews, and alternate review options.
  • Maintaining code knowledge through code update research and attendance at continuing education seminars and classes.
  • Assists Project Manager Assistant and department management in technical and customer problem resolutions for all projects.
  • Desired candidates prioritize customer service, integrity, and a commitment to support growth and profitability.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Knowledge of:
  • IBC, IRC, IMC, IPC, IRC, IFGC, IECC, and NEC codes, ordinances, and directives, including building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and accessibility as applied to moderately complex new and existing commercial construction projects.
  • Various construction materials and methods and stages of construction.
  • Mathematical principles required to perform related technical calculations.
  • Microsoft Office at a proficient level.
  • Ability to:
  • Cooperate with internal and external Stantec clients and the public.
  • Read and accurately interpret plans and specifications.
  • Objectively interpret and consistently apply code requirements and related standards in accordance with department policies.
  • Draw or letter charts, schedules, graphs, maps, or similar objects.
  • Measure dimensions using engineer's and architect's scales.
  • Use graphic instructions, such as blueprints, plans, schematic drawings, or other visual aids.
  • Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
  • Work safely without presenting a threat to self or others.

Education and Experience

High school diploma and a minimum of five (5) years of experience reviewing plans, specifications, and other data to ensure proposed construction conforms to building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes, ordinance, and related regulations. Other combinations of experience and education meeting the minimum requirements may be substituted. Must possess the following certifications: ICC Building Plans Examiner OR ICC Building Inspector and at least one other ICC certification in mechanical, plumbing, or electrical.
