The Princeton University Department of Geosciences seeks to hire a half-time Research Specialist I for the isotope biogeochemistry laboratory of Professor Daniel Sigman. The work of the lab focuses on studies of the global nitrogen cycle, today and in the past, using state-of-the-art methods developed in this lab. A background in or experience with microbiology or analytical chemistry is ideal. There will be opportunities to participate in measurements, interpretation of data, and publication of results.

This is a one year term position, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and available funding.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing microbial growth media and inoculating cultures of naturally isolated soil bacteria;
  • Assisting or collaborating with other lab members to make isotopic measurements of nitrogen from environmental samples, which will involve the lab’s Thermo MAT253 stable isotope mass spectrometer and purpose-built sample introduction system
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and ordering consumables as needed;
  • Communicating with the lab group regarding supplies, schedules, and facilities; and
  • Helping visitors with standard operating procedures for basic lab activities.


Qualifications include a bachelor degree in chemistry, geoscience, or a related field. Some laboratory experience is required.
