IDC's IT Executive Program (IEP) consist of a family of research programs intended to help today's time-constrained technology professionals and influencers make more effective technology and governance decisions. IEP offers actionable, timely, and fact-based research that assists technology professionals and influencers in creating effective IT operational strategies to optimize enterprise business outcomes, mitigate technology risks, maximize the effectiveness of IT investments, and capitalize on innovation opportunities.

IDC is seeking a Research VP to create and deliver forward-thinking advisory research and client services to senior IT executives in large organizations. This individual will focus on best practices for supporting and enabling IT Operations teams as they work to accommodate cascading changes like shifting workloads off-premise; managing enterprise workload service delivery across a complex on-premise/off-premise/edge hybrid computing infrastructure; introducing artificial intelligence (AI) automation to improve IT Operations productivity and effectiveness; creating new collaborative governance and process models to enable Internet of Things (IoT) devices across business ecosystems; and addressing new risks and opportunities arising from the accelerating convergence of IT, Operations Technology (OT), and external networks.

This individual's advisory and best practices research will encompass evolving governance and process frameworks, methodologies, and metrics (KPIs), and guidance on topics such as talent and skills management, staffing optimization models, and change management for line managers and executives within IT Operations teams. In addition, this Research VP will rethink the traditional boundaries of IT Operations and IT Service Management by addressing the hosting strategies of next-generation IT services and microservices (including off-premise, cloud-oriented IT solutions) delivered now by both the IT function and technology professionals in line-of-business (LOB) operating units. The individual will provide high-level advice to customers on selecting, sourcing, implementing, operating, and supporting the complex, on- and off-premise technology and service options available to enterprise business leaders and IT executives.

This individual will plan and execute a compelling research agenda, generate well-designed surveys and analyze their results, provide direct support to customers and prospects, speak at industry events and web conferences, and deliver quality custom projects. The candidate will have already demonstrated groundbreaking thought leadership within ITSM, expertise in adjacent IT governance topics, and intellectual curiosity across cloud and other relevant IT disciplines.

The Research VP will be responsible for developing an annual research agenda and delivering high-quality studies on a predetermined schedule. This research will utilize IDC's existing research architecture and incorporate IDC's proprietary DecisionScape decision-making frameworks for IT executives and technology professionals. This individual will also be charged with developing meaningful assessment tools and creating new approaches for evaluating IT Operations success.

This role will require interaction with both clients and fellow research colleagues at all organizational levels, cultivation of an active social media presence, and representing IDC's capabilities and thought leadership to the market and the media. This research leader will cultivate research and consulting relationships with clients, including up-selling, cross-selling, and consulting engagements. In addition, they will serve as a subject matter expert with the sales force for lead development and proposal development for all opportunities related to IT Operational Excellence.

The candidate will have a proven history of successfully advising IT executives on all aspects of IT governance and IT services transformation, including process improvement frameworks and methodologies inherent within IT Service Management (ITSM); this individual will also have expertise in addressing the delivery and management of next-generation IT services focused on business objectives. Strong research development, writing, presentation, and client-facing skills are required. Previous experience in an IT market advisory firm is valued.

The desired individual will have an undergraduate degree with 15+ years' working experience in an enterprise-class IT organization or consulting and advising with similar organizations on IT operational excellence. Additionally, the following skills and attributes are desired:

  • Ability to provide actionable advice to executive-level management in both written and verbal forms
  • Ability to advise clients both strategically and tactically
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • A passion for working in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Strong Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills
