Functional Description:

Oversees the activities related to the technical support and process development engineering functions of a manufacturing area. Plans and implements the development of new and scale-up process formulas. Establishes operating equipment specifications and acts as a liaison with product design and development to ensure processes and designs are compatible. Leads efforts to achieve cost effectiveness and improved product quality. Selects, develops, and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Lead and manage a R&D process engineering team in the development of equipment and processes to build novel medical devices in the management of diabetes.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers to support project goals and employee career development.
  • Perform resource planning activities, to anticipate resource requirements to meet corporate goals and the corporate product development roadmap in collaboration with upper management.
  • Perform regular reviews of direct reports work to insure good engineering practices are followed, mechanically robust and efficient solutions are achieved, and safety and risk considerations are addressed.
  • Provide input and contribute to technical development strategy.
  • Interview, make hiring recommendations/decisions, manage compensation/rewards, generate performance reviews, and resolve conflicts as necessary.
  • This position assumes and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:


  • Proven ability to work hands-on in a fast-paced environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of high reliability, high volume manufacturing processes and designs.
  • Proficient in the use of SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software. Strong drafting skills including tolerancing and GD&T.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products.
  • Demonstrated technical or process experience in the following areas:

    • Equipment design, modification and sourcing.
    • Industrial controls and/or software experience that use programmable logic controllers (PLC) or personal computers (PC)
    • Tooling and fixture design for locating individual parts.
    • Automation components (e.g., robotics, actuators, pneumatics, servos, stepper motors, pick-and-place mechanisms)
    • Creating and releasing equipment specifications and drawings, establishing calibration and preventative maintenance requirements
    • Determining process parameters, process windows and cliffs. Use of DOE.
    • Equipment qualifications (IQ, OQ, PQ)
    • Troubleshooting and root cause analysis

  • Familiar with data analysis methods and analysis software, experience in JMP preferred.
  • Ability to manage projects, teams, maintain timelines, transfer technology and execute projects in an R&D environment.
  • Ability to be successful in an ambiguous/uncertain product development space along with a willingness engage in new/challenging endeavors.
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and management skills.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
  • Previous direct experience in the medical device industry.

Experience and Education Requirements:


  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree with 8-12 years of industry experience. 2-5 years of previous management or lead experience.

Travel Required:


  • Up to 25%
